September 10, 2023 | Women's Rowing
Seven current or former Washington rowers earned medals and a total of 11 qualified their countries for the 2024 Olympic Games as the 2023 World Rowing Championships wrapped up Sunday in Belgrade, Serbia.
Coxswain and 2022 UW captain Nina Castagna '22, along with former Husky rowers Brooke Mooney '18 and Jessica Thoennes '18, helped lead the United States to the silver medal in the women's eight A final, easily securing the U.S. one of five qualifying spots for Paris next summer. Husky junior Aisha Rocek '25, who also competed in the women's pair in Belgrade, and her Italian women's eight, finished sixth in the A final, one place shy of qualification.
In the men's eight final, former Husky captain Jacob Dawson '16 earned a gold medal as the bow seat of the Great Britain crew. A 2020 Olympic gold medalist, Dawson now stands to compete for another medal in 2024.
Gert-Jan van Doorn '20 earned the silver in that same final, earning an Olympic berth for his Netherlands eight. Americans Ezra Carlson '16, Chris Carlson '19 and Pieter Quinton '21 finished sixth in the men's eight final, falling one spot short of Olympic qualification, though there will be additional opportunities in the future.
Dutch single sculler Simon van Dorp '20 earned a silver medal in his final, also good for qualification for next year's Olympics. In the men's pair, Evan Olson '19, from Bothell, Wash., finished fifth in the A final, earning an Olympics berth for the U.S.
On Saturday, New Zealand's Logan Ullrich '23 and his men's coxless four finished third in the A final, taking home a bronze medal while also qualifying for the 2024 Games.
Two other Kiwis – Ella Cossill '22 and Phoebe Spoors '17 – won the women's four B final, which awarded them the seventh and final Olympic qualification spot in that race category.
In Saturday's women's quad sculls B final, German Tabea Schendekehl '21 and her crew finished first, securing the last Olympics place in the W4x.
