Huskies End Day One On Upswing As Gabriel Gets Win One
August 25, 2023 | Volleyball
HAMMOND, La. โ Opening day for Husky Volleyball had ups and downs as Washington played great at times and gritted through some tough moments with multiple new players trying to establish roles. But after a tough morning five set loss, the Huskies ended the evening in the win column, defeating host Southeastern Louisiana in four sets to give Leslie Gabriel her first victory as Head Coach following 22 years as an assistant.
ย
"Obviously it feels great to get a win but more importantly was playing more to our strengths in the second match tonight, and we need to just keep focusing on improvement because we saw some great potential today along with plenty of areas that we need to develop," said Gabriel. "But we got to see a lot of different lineups and combinations today and we are far from a finished product."
ย
The Huskies downed the reigning Southland Conference Champions on their home court by a 25-14, 25-18, 17-25, 25-18 score. After dominating the first two sets with stellar serving and clean attacking, UW's level dropped and the Lions made a match of it with a win in the third, and then the fourth set was even at 15-all before the Huskies went on a 10-3 run to close it out.
ย
Washington hit .336 and had 13 aces, five from Kayce Litzau, and held an 8.0 to 1.0 edge in blocks. Senior May Pertofsky led the team in kills for the second time today, backing up her 18 kills in the opener with 14 more in the nightcap, hitting .545. Madi Endsley added 13 kills on a .323 mark and Audra Wilmes notched 11 with a pair of aces. Freshman Kierstyn Barton had six kills hitting .455.
ย
