SEATTLE -- Washington women's basketball's Darcy Rees has been named one of two 2023 Pac-12 Leadership Award winners, the conference announced today.
Rees, a senior from Adelaide, South Australia, becomes the fourth Husky to ever win the award, and the first from the women's basketball program. Previous Washington winners are Natalie Robinson (beach volleyball, 2020-21), Gareth Gilna (track & field, 2012-13), and Molly Seaman (gymnastics, 2004-05).
"We couldn't be more excited that Darcy is being recognized with the Pac-12 Leadership award," Kim Durand, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Development, said. "Not only has she been a leader in our SAAC since her freshman year, she has served as President of our Global Pack student group for international student-athletes. She represented UW well as a member of the Pac-12 SALT team in crucial times for the conference and became a respected voice across the conference. We are very proud and look forward to seeing Darcy's continued success and impact."
In June, Rees graduated from the University of Washington with two degrees in B.A. Early Childhood and Family Studies and B.A. Psychology, as well as a minor in diversity. Rees was the President of Strategic Initiatives for WSAAC (Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Committee), a member of Pac-12 SAAC, and an executive board member of Global Pack at UW.
During the 2022-23 academic year, Rees was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team, the University of Washington's Husky 100, and the 2023 Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll. She also ended her basketball career after five seasons at Washington at No. 9 on the UW list for career blocked shots (81).
The Pac-12 Conference established the Pac-12 Leadership Award in 2002 to recognize student-athletes who have served on their institutional Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) and demonstrated leadership. The Pac-12 SAAC, which is composed of representatives from each member institution, selects the winners of the award each year from nominations submitted by each campus SAAC.
