Kary Whitney Elevated to Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach
June 12, 2023 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Washington women's soccer head coach Nicole Van Dyke has announced that goalkeepers coach Kary Whitney has been elevated to assistant coach.
"I am so excited to continue to work with Kary," Van Dyke said. "Over the past year, Kary has been an integral part of the growth of our team. His work rate, attention to detail and mentorship to our team members has been top class. I look forward to his continued success in his new role and excited for the future of UW Women's Soccer."
Whitney enters his second season on the Husky staff, coming to Montlake ahead of the 2022 season as volunteer assistant coach, leading instruction for Washington's goalkeepers.
"I am really excited to continue working with UW women's soccer," Whitney said. "This is a great opportunity to continue moving forward in my career and pick up where we left off last fall. I want to thank Coach Van Dyke and the athletics department for providing me with this role. I also want to thank the women's soccer staff. I'm looking forward to this upcoming season to work with everyone again.
"We have very talented goalkeepers who have put in the work this spring and a couple new Huskies joining us this fall. The goalkeeping culture is deeply rooted at the UW and I am privileged to get to have worked with goalkeepers like Olivia Sekany, who has since joined NWSL side Racing Louisville. This sets a great example for those who join us. I can't wait to get back in the box with the keepers."
During Whitney's first season at UW in 2023, he guided a pair of Husky keepers in veteran starter Olivian Sekany and upstart freshman Olivia Juarez. Sekany started all 19 matches between the posts for the Dawgs, earning a 1.30 GAA with five clean sheets, including two solo efforts. Juarez saw action in six matches off the bench, surrendering a single goal all season.
Whitney made the short trip to Montlake from Seattle Pacific, where he served as goalkeeper coach.
During his time at SPU, Whitney coached the goalkeeping group to the lowest goals against average in the country for over half the season in 2021. In addition, the Seattle Pacific coaching staff won the NCAA/NCSA Western Region Coaching Staff of the Year after leading the team to the GNAC regular and postseason titles and the NCAA DII Western Regional Championship.
Whitney is also deeply connected to the club soccer scene in the Emerald City, coaching the Seattle United Soccer Club in the Junior Sounders Program. He also serves as head coach of the U-16 G07 Copa ECRL.
Prior to SPU, Whitney was a volunteer assistant at Bellevue College working with the men's and women's soccer teams.
Whitney is a 2018 graduate of Seattle Pacific, where he earned a bachelor's degree in family consumer sciences: human development and family studies with a minor in psychology.
