SEATTLE -- The Huskies begin their 2023 NCAA tournament run in Norman, Oklahoma this weekend with a Friday first round showdown against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Washington and Arkansas are being hosted by 13th-seeded Oklahoma, which takes on Hawaii in the other first round match on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Start time on Friday for the Huskies is 10 a.m. Pacific time with a live stream on Oklahoma's Playsight. Oklahoma and Hawaii will follow. The winners will advance to the second round on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific and Saturday's winner reaches the 16-team Super Regional.
Washington, ranked 23rd, is making its 17th appearance in the NCAA Championships and second-straight, looking for its first tourney win since 2019. This is the first time since 2010-11 that the Huskies have appeared in back-to-back tournaments.
The Huskies bring a 17-8 record into the tournament, with thirteen of those twenty-five matches coming against teams that made the NCAA tournament. Washington went 8-5 against those tourney teams, with two wins over UCLA, and wins against Arizona State, Baylor, Hawaii, San Diego, USC, and Vanderbilt.
Washington's first round opponent, Arkansas, went 12-11 in the regular season and was ranked No. 44 in the last ITA poll. The Razorbacks were 6-7 in SEC play, getting big wins over Auburn, currently ranked 19th, and matching UW's win over Vanderbilt. Arkansas has two players in the upcoming NCAA Singles Championship, as Carolina Gomez is ranked 41st nationally and Kelly Keller is No. 57. In doubles, Indianna Spink and Morgan Cross are ranked 46th. Washington is 0-2 all-time against Arkansas.
Oklahoma lost in the finals of the Big 12 Championship to 12th-ranked Texas, after getting a big win in the semifinals over 11th-ranked Iowa State. The Sooners were Big 12 regular season co-champions with Texas as both teams went 8-1. Oklahoma finished 20-9, and was one of the sixteen teams in Seattle for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships back in February. Layne Sleeth is ranked 59th in singles, Dana Guzman is ranked 79th, and Carmen Corley is ranked 114th. Ivana Corley and Carmen Corley are ranked 7th in doubles, and Alexandra Pisareva and Layne Sleeth are ranked 58th. The Sooners won the only meeting between the teams.
The Huskies defeated Hawaii in their 2023 dual match opener back on Jan. 21. Hawaii earned the Big West auto bid by defeating UC Irvine, Long Beach State, and Cal Poly last week in San Diego. Hawaii is 14-7 overall. This is Hawaii's third NCAA appearance in program history.
