April 25, 2023 | Softball
SEATTLE – No. 10 Washington (33-10, 14-7 Pac-12) travels across town to face Seattle U in a midweek matchup on Wednesday night. First pitch from Logan Field is set for 6 p.m. and airing on ESPN+.
30 SEASONS OF WASHINGTON SOFTBALL
2023 marks the 30th anniversary of Washington softball. The Huskies first year as a program was in 1993. Head coach Heather Tarr has been a part of 24 of 30 seasons in the Purple and Gold as a player, manager and coach.
THE LAST TIME OUT
The Huskies won their second consecutive Pac-12 series in a 2-1 series victory over then-No. 18 Utah at Husky Softball Stadium. Utah won the first game 2-1, but the Huskies fought back to take game two 6-5 in nine innings and 5-3 in the series finale. Baylee Klingler hit a walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning in game two of the series.
SENIORS SHINED ON SENIOR DAY
On Sunday, the seniors shined in the series finale against Utah. Baylee Klingler, Madison Huskey, Sami Reynolds, SilentRain Espinoza, Jadelyn Allchin and Brooke Nelson combined for all nine of Washington's hits. Kelley Lynch also picked up the save.
NOT ACTING LIKE FRESHMAN
The four freshmen have contributed a lot to the Husky program so far in 2023. Alana Johnson is fifth on the team with 20 RBI and third with seven home runs. Ruby Meylan is nationally ranked in shutouts (6) and strikeouts (161). Brooklyn Carter is a force on the base paths, leading the team and second in the conference with 23 stolen bases. Sydney Stewart has split time at catcher with a .290 average and seven RBI.
WHAT A WEEK FOR BK
Last week, Baylee Klingler was drafted second overall in the Women's Professional Fastpitch 2023 Draft by the Texas Smoke based out of Austin. Klingler was also honored as one of 25 finalists for USA Softball National Player of the Year.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
Seattle U sits at 27-17 on the season with an 8-10 record in the WAC. At the plate, the Redhawks are led by Jocelynn De La Cruz with a .384 average and eight home runs. Madison Kahwaty leads the team with 14 doubles. In the circle, Seattle U holds at 3.72 team ERA. Stefanie Madrigal leads the team with 13 wins so far in the season with 60 strikeouts and 12 complete games. Washington is 18-0 all-time vs. Seattle U with a 12-0 record at Husky Softball Stadium and a 3-0 record at Logan Field and 3-0 at a neutral site.
INAUGURAL PAC-12 TOURNAMENT
Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium will serve as the host site for the inaugural Pac-12 Softball Tournament, which is set to make its debut from May 10-13, 2023. The four-day event will begin with a play-in game between the eighth and ninth-place teams in the regular-season standings on Wednesday. That winner will advance to an eight-team, single-elimination bracket with the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship being contested on the following three days. The winner of the Pac-12 Softball Tournament will receive the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Limited tickets are still available by visiting pac12.me/SBTix.
