Huskies Post Another 6-1 Win For 4-0 Start
January 29, 2023 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE โ The Huskies completed their first two day homestand with a second-straight 6-1 win today over Portland State at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Washington improved to 4-0 by winning the doubles point and then taking five of six singles matches.
ย
Freshman Erika Matsuda got the clincher for the Huskies today with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Nika Beukers. That made it 4-0, following singles wins by Astrid Olsen at No. 3 and Jennifer Kerr at No. 4. Olsen and Kerr lost a combined two games between them.
ย
Sarah-Maude Fortin had a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win at No. 2 singles over Capu Sanoner and Melissa Sakar ended the day with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 over Makoto Ohara. PSU's one point came in a third set super-tiebreak as Hikaru Sato turned her match around after losing set one, winning set two against Masha Ponomareva, but then falling 10-6 in the tiebreak.
ย
The doubles point came down to the final match at third doubles. Kerr and Sakar broke for a 6-5 lead and then held serve to clinch it, 7-5, against Ohara/Strongina. Prior to that, Fortin and Matsuda had a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles to offset a Husky loss at the No. 1 spot.
ย
Washington will now go back on the road to Boise, Idaho to take on Boise State next Friday, Feb. 3, and Wisconsin in a neutral site match at Boise on Feb. 4.
