BOISE – Washington started its road trip with a victory over the Boise State Broncos today. The Dawgs started with a doubles win to head into singles with a 1-0 lead, then racked up an additional six wins in singles to end the day with a 7-0 sweep. The Huskies remain undefeated at 5-0 early in the season. Sarah-Maude Fortin provided the clincher at No. 2 singles today.
Washington took the early 1-0 lead with winning two of the three doubles matches. Erika Matsuda and Astrid Olsen got the first win, over Discenza/Marruffo, not giving up a game in their first match as a pair. Doubles partners, Sarah-Maude Fortin and Jennifer Kerr, followed in their teammates' footsteps with their 6-1 win over Ernstberger/Heffernan at the No. 3 spot. Freshman, Zehra Suko, made her collegiate debut with her doubles partner, Hikaru Sato. The Huskies were trailing at that spot, 2-4, but it went unfinished as the Huskies headed into singles with an early 1-0 lead.
Junior Astrid Olsen started off the singles matches strong with a No. 3 win 6-2, 6-2, over Holly Stewart. Jennifer Kerr followed this example and remained victorious at No. 4 over Joana Baptista with a 6-0, 6-4 win. The clincher belonged to Sarah-Maude Fortin with her No. 2 win over Lorelyz Marruffo, 6-3, 6-3.
Fourth to finish was freshman Erika Matsuda. Matsuda at the No. 6 singles position lost in set one 4-6. This fueled her fire and led her to rally and defeat Bronco, Bhakti Shah, with a 6-2 win in set two and a tiebreaker win of 10-8. In No. 1 singles, Hikaru Sato won 7-6, 6-2 to defeat Pauline Ernstberger. At fifth singles, Melissa Sakar lost set one, 3-6, but was able to come back and win sets two and three 6-2, 6-2 to stay undefeated in dual play at 5-0.
