Five Huskies Medal At World Rowing Under 23 Championships

Five Washington rowers earned medals at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships, which wrapped up Saturday in Varese, Italy.
Australian coxswain Nick Dunlop led his nation's women's coxed four to a gold medal on Friday, and Giulio Acernese, the Italian team captain, won gold on Saturday in the lightweight men's double sculls. Dunlop's crew rowed a world best time in its heat earlier in the week and then beat it in the final.
Additionally, on Friday, American Elena Collier-Hezel, an incoming transfer rower, took home the bronze in the U.S. women's coxed four. On Saturday, Logan Ullrich won the silver in the New Zealand men's coxless four and Aussie Darcy McCluskey earned a bronze medal in the men's eight.
Tomorrow, incoming freshman Mira Calder will race in the A final in the Canadian women's pair at the Under 19 Championships, which are also being held in Varese. Calder is the daughter of former UW oarsman and four-time Canadian Olympian Dave Calder.
Earlier this summer, Washington sent a its largest ever contingent of men's and women's rowers to the Henley Royal Regatta in England, which some cases limited the athletes' ability to participate in their national team programs.
