Washington Celebrates 50 Years of Title IX
June 23, 2022 | General
SEATTLE – Today – June 23, 2022 – marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the landmark Title IX legislation, and with it, the announcement that the University of Washington Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will celebrate this historic event throughout the coming 2022-23 academic year.
Title IX is the commonly-used name for a portion of a federal civil rights law that was passed by the United States Congress and signed into law on this date in 1972. The Title IX segment of the new law updated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to address discrimination in education. While the law was not specifically designed to precipitate gender equity in collegiate athletics, it did indeed lead to a years-long attempt to level the playing field in terms of opportunities for women in college sports, which continues today.
"It's incredible to look back on the last 50 years and recognize the opportunities that Title IX has provided for women," said Director of Athletics, Jennifer Cohen. Countless lives have been changed for the better through athletic competition and we are grateful for the pioneers who have helped pave the way. At Washington, our women's programs have experienced amazing success, including National Championships in Rowing, Cross Country, Golf, Softball and Volleyball. We couldn't be more excited to take the year ahead to reflect on and celebrate all of the great things that have been accomplished the past 50 years as we continue to build for the future."
The athletic department partnered with a steering committee of prominent UW athletic alumnae, who will help to guide the ways in which the department will celebrate and commemorate the passing of Title IX and, more importantly, the resulting successes it has brought to the UW and its supporters.
Here are the women who will comprise that committee:
Women's Basketball: Kelsey Plum, Ingrid Russell-Narcisse, Rhonda Smith-Banchero
Volleyball: Courtney Thompson, Krista Vansant
Beach Volleyball: Christal Morrison, Crissy Jones
Women's Track & Field/Cross Country: Aretha Thurmond (Hill), Falesha Johnson
Women's Tennis: Vanessa Wong, Trish Bostrom
Women's Swimming: Cat Clark
Women's Golf: Paige Mackenzie, Molly Boyle
Women's Gymnastics: Samantha Walior, Evanni Roberson
Women's Rowing: Linda Cox Fornaciari; Jan Harville, Mary Whipple
Softball: Sis Bates, Danielle Lawrie, Courtney Gano
Women's Soccer: Tina Frimpong-Ellertson, Madi McNamara, Erin Mayovsky
Additionally, Husky Athletics has established the "Mighty Are the Women Title IX Fund" to promote broad-based support from alumni, fans, and friends, providing additional funding to female student-athletes and UW's 12 women's programs. Gifts to this newly established fund will provide operational support for all women's sport programs. Please visit www.GoHuskies.com/TitleIXFund to donate.
Corporate partners, adidas, Carter Subaru and BECU, are supporting initiatives throughout the year such as panel speakers, career development events and networking opportunities.
