SEATTLE -- Sixty-four teams are ready to take their best shots in the 2022 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships starting tomorrow morning, and Washington will be up early for its first round challenge. The Huskies, returning to NCAAs for the first time since 2019, are set to face Baylor Friday morning at 8 a.m. Pacific time, 10 a.m. local time, in College Station, Texas. Live video is available via the TennisOne app.
The Huskies, ranked 39th, take on the 27th-ranked Bears at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Following that match, the Aggies take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in another first round dual. The winners of each match will then play on Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m. Pacific in the second round.
The winner of Saturday's second round advances to super-regional competition May 13 or 14. Each super-regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super-regional winners advance to the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois, where the eight teams will compete for the national championship May 20-22.
Washington has been battling through injuries late in the year but achieved its primary goal of reaching the NCAA tournament, where it last made a run to the Round of 16 in 2019. This is the third NCAA trip under Head Coach Robin Stephenson. UW went 14-11 on the year, led by All-Pac-12 Second Team selection Vanessa Wong, who played No. 1 singles and compiled a 11-9 record at the spot and honorable mention All-Pac-12 picks Sarah-Maude Fortin and Nika Zupancic. Fortin has been out of the lineup since Apr. 2, but had a 14-3 record and is ranked 98th nationally. Wong is currently ranked No. 109. Zupancic also missed a few matches late in the year but returned for the final three, and is 12-6 on the season. Hikaru Sato has also been crucial for the Dawgs, going 13-7 in dual play, with Yolanda Lin, Zoey Weil, Kelly Leung, and Tara Chilton all contributing in the lower half of the lineup.
Baylor has gone 15-8 this season and was 6-3 in conference. They dropped a Big 12 quarterfinal match to Kansas. Against the Pac-12, Baylor had a 5-2 win over Colorado and a 4-3 loss to USC. Baylor also had a tight 4-3 loss to fourth-ranked Texas on Apr. 16. Three Bears were named to the All-Big 12 Second Team: Alicia Herrero Linana, Mel Krywoj, and Alina Shcherbinina. Herrero Linana and Krywoj were also named First Team in doubles and are ranked No. 7 nationally. Herrero Linana is also ranked 108th in singles.
The Southeastern Conference Champion Aggies (30-1) are making their 27th overall and 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. A&M is led on the courts by a trio of All-SEC First Team performers in Carson Branstine, Tatiana Makarova, and Jayci Goldsmith. In the ITA rankings, Branstine is ranked No. 8 nationally, Makarova is 24th, and Mary Stoiana is 74th. Goldsmith and Makarova are No. 6 in doubles, while Branstine and Stoiana are 47th.
The Islanders from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are 22-3 and won the Southland COnference Championships for the second year in a row. A&M-Corpus Christi will sport a lineup of five All-Conference singles players, two All-Conference doubles teams, the SLC Player of the Year in sophomore Emma Aucagne and the SLC Tournament MVP in junior Mariya Shumeika.
