SEATTLE -- The Boeing Apple Cup Series and Senior Day bring the regular season to a close this week for the Washington women's tennis team. The Huskies make the trek to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars in the annual rivalry match this Friday, Apr. 15, before coming back home for a non-conference match with San Francisco on Sunday, Apr. 17, to end the regular season.
Sunday's match, scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, will be Senior Day for the Dawgs, as UW will honor the trio of Zoey Weil, Vanessa Wong, and Nika Zupancic, in a pre-match ceremony.
The Huskies come in at No. 32 in the ITA rankings this week, with Vanessa Wong reentering the singles poll at No. 101 and Wong and Hikaru Sato ranked 85th in doubles. Washington battled without two of its top-three singles starters last week as Sarah-Maude Fortin and Nika Zupancic were out with injuries against Stanford and Cal, but the Huskies still nearly pulled off a huge upset over 9th-ranked Cal, falling 4-3. UW will be aiming to close the regular season with wins to bolster its position for NCAA postseason inclusion. Another chance to do that will come with the Pac-12 Championships, next week in Ojai, Calif.
But first the Huskies and Cougars will go at it on Friday at 1:30 p.m., then UW will host the Dons on Sunday.
Weil, Wong, and Zupancic have helped the Huskies weather the pandemic and look to get the team back to NCAAs in their final seasons, after helping the team to the NCAA Round of 16 in 2019. Wong goes into this week as one of the most decorated Huskies in history and is one win away from tying the UW career wins record, with 110. The native of Toronto, Canada has held down the No. 1 singles spot for the Huskies for the past three years, and been ranked as high as 14th nationally, qualifying for a pair of NCAA Singles Championships and one Doubles Championship.
Weil (Columbus, Ohio) is coming off one of her biggest wins as she earned a huge point last weekend against the Golden Bears with a three-set victory. Weil has gone 35-19 in singles for her career and 43-31 in doubles, with 35 doubles dual victories.
Zupancic has been a four-year singles and doubles starter, racking up 57 singles wins and 50 doubles wins including an 11-4 dual singles mark this year, all at the No. 3 position. She earned her first individual singles ranking earlier this season, and had wins in UW's top-20 road upsets at UCLA and at Arizona State this year. The product of Slovenia has never met a three-set battle she didn't embrace, and she qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship in 2019.
The Cougars have one of the hottest singles players as Michaela Bayerlova has risen to 41st nationally with a 16-2 record, and earned Pac-12 Player of the Week this week. The Cougars also nearly upset Cal last week, also falling by a 4-3 score. Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy are ranked 57th in doubles. WSU also nearly pulled off upsets of USC and Utah, both 4-3 defeats.
San Francisco is 10-7 this season and will head to the West Coast Conference Championships on Apr. 17. The Dons were shutout by Pac-12 teams USC and Stanford. April has seen San Francisco defeat Portland and Gonzaga and drop a 4-3 match at BYU.
