Huskies Fourth After Two Rounds (Almost!) At Western Intercollegiate
April 12, 2022 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The No. 6-ranked Washington men's golf team finished – or nearly finished – the second round of the Western Intercollegiate in fourth place. Senior RJ Manke is tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard, at 5-over for the tournament.
With darkness descending on the golf course as the final foursome came to the 18th tee, the two Texas players opted to play their final hole, while Manke and Petr Hruby chose to call it a night and finish on Wednesday, prior to teeing off for their final round. They'll play the 18th hole at 8:10 a.m. PT, officially completing the final round.
It was another day of challenging conditions at Pasatiempo Golf Club, with all 14 teams over par – most of them 20-plus strokes over.
Washington, which entered the day in third place, was 26-over for the day on Tuesday, with the two players yet to finish, and are 49-over par overall. The tournament concludes tomorrow. No. 9 Texas leads the field with a 27-over 727. Pepperdine (31-over, 731) and San Diego State (44-over 744) are second and third.
"The golf course is extremely tough and the winds are extremely strong," said UW head coach Alan Murray. "It doesn't take much for you to look silly out here. It hasn't gone exactly as we would have hoped, but all in all, it's been a really good experience playing in a championship-style setup. We're getting a crash course -- hopefully it's short-term pain for long-term gain."
Manke was 2-over for the day and 5-over for the tournament before finishing prior to No. 18. He is tied for eighth. On Tuesday, he had three birdies, three bogies and a double bogey.
Teddy Lin turned in the best second-round score among the Husky starters, with a 1-over 71. He had six birdies in his round, including on No. 18. In Monday's opening round, no player scored a birdie on 18. Lin is tied for 14th place, at 7-over.
"Teddy's 1-over was extremely impressive," Murray noted. "He made a triple on 12 and responded with three birdies coming in. That was really good for us."
Senior Noah Woolsey finished Tuesday tied for 18th at 8-over.
The tournament comes to a close with round three on Wednesday, with the first players getting started at 7:30 a.m. PT. The Golf Channel will carry live coverage from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. PT.
