March 23, 2022 | Softball
SEATTLE – The No. 9 Washington softball program welcomes No. 3 UCLA to Husky Softball Stadium this weekend for a three-game series.
Washington returns home after six straight weekends on the road. The last time the Dawgs started the first six weekends away was in 2005, in Coach Heather Tarr's first season as head coach.
Baylee Klingler continues her historic season, currently leading the Pac-12 in home runs (13), which is tied for second-most in the nation. Her 43 RBI are also second-most in the NCAA. The senior is one home run away from ranking 10th on the all-time Husky history list.
The opening contest is scheduled for Friday at 5:00 pm PT. Saturday, the teams will rematch at 3:00 pm PT. Both Friday and Saturday's games will be available on the Pac-12 Network. The series concludes Sunday on ESPNU at 4:00 pm PT.
Saturday, Washington will celebrate its Olympians from the 2020 Olympic Games. Husky legend Danielle Lawrie, who competed for Team Canada, will throw out the first pitch. Ali Aguilar (USA), Gabbie Plain (Australia), Victoria Hayward (Canada) and Jenn Salling (Canada) will also be honored.
COMING UP CLUTCH
Junior Jadelyn Allchin hit her first home run of the year Friday against Cal. The two-run home run would give the Dawgs the lead for good. She had not recorded a hit since the second game of the season.
LEADER OF THE PAC
Baylee Klingler currently leads the Pac-12 in home runs (13), which is tied for second-most in the nation. Her 43 RBI are the second-most by an individual in the NCAA. She has 34 career home runs and only needs one more to rank 10th on the all-time Husky history list. Klingler's slugging percentage (1.059) ranks third among all collegiate athletes.
NOT ACTING LIKE FRESHMEN
Washington's freshmen have established themselves as integral parts of the Husky program.
Kinsey Fiedler was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on March 14. Fiedler hit two home runs Sunday against Cal, joining teammate Olivia Johnson and former Huskies Noelle Hee and Taylor Van Zee as the only freshmen Dawgs to go yard twice in a single game. In her first at-bat in Husky Softball Stadium against Robert Morris, she hit her first home run since the opening weekend. Her triple against Northern Colorado was the first of her career, and her three RBI in that game was also a single-game season-high.
Against Northern Colorado, Rylee Holtorf hit her first career home run. Holtorf has seen extensive time at the shortstop position.
Angie Yellen has played in 17 games. Against Northern Colorado, she had three hits, one home run and two doubles.
Olivia Johnson is hitting .278 and slugging .611 on the year. She was named National Player of the Week after opening weekend, when she went 7-for-7 in her first career at-bats with three home runs, eight RBI and drawing seven walks (five intentional).
GONE STREAKING
Baylee Klingler is on a season-long 12-game hit streak and a season-long 14 game reached base streak. Kinsey Fiedler is on a career-long eight-game reached base streak.
PLAIN AND SIMPLE
Gabbie Plain continues to rewrite the Husky record books in her fifth and final year. This season, she ranks third with 95 strikeouts in the Pac-12. The Australian native is fourth in the nation with six shutouts. She earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors for the first two weeks of the 2022 season. Plain is 47 strikeouts away from 1,000 career K's.
LAST TIME OUT
The Dawgs return home after six straight weekends on the road. Washington hadn't started the season on the road for the first six weekends since 2005 in Coach Heather Tarr's first season as head coach.
Washington is 33-65 all-time against UCLA. In 2021, the Dawgs fell in the series opener, 1-6, before rebounding the next day to win 7-4. Washington has only won one of the last 11 matchups.
IRON SHARPENS IRON
Washington has compiled a tough schedule that will challenge the purple and gold from the get-go. 24 of the Husky's 51 scheduled games are against opponents ranked or receiving votes in the preseason USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. The breakdown is as follows: No. 3 UCLA (3) // No. 5 Oklahoma State (1) // No. 8 Arkansas (2) // No. 9 Arizona (3) // No. 11 Missouri (1) // No. 14 LSU (1) // No. 15 Clemson (1) // No. 18 Oregon (3) // No. 21 Arizona State (3) // No. 22 Tennessee (1) // RV Northwestern (1) // RV Iowa State (1) // RV Stanford (3)
RED, WHITE AND BLUE
Selected by members of the USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Committee, Coach Heather Tarr will lead the red, white and blue at the 2022 World Games, in addition to various international competitions throughout 2022. Various Huskies have competed for Team USA over the year, and have been named to future rosters as well. The Husky freshmen trio of Kinsey Fiedler, Olivia Johnson and Rylee Holtorf won the WBSC U-18 World Cup in December 2021 as part of USA Softball's U-18 Women's National Team. The three also won gold at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games, where the U.S. recorded a 10-0 run-rule victory over Mexico in the gold medal game, to finish the tournament undefeated at 6-0.
Seniors Sami Reynolds and Baylee Klingler were named to the USA Softball roster for the 2022 Canada Cup, held in Surrey, B.C., June 20-26, and the Japan All-Star Series, which will take place in Fukushima, Japan, Aug. 1-9. Earlier this year, Reynolds was named as an alternate for the 2022 USA Softball National Team that will compete at the 2022 World Games in July in Alabama.
