March 21, 2022 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 8-ranked Washington men's golf team finished day one of the Duck Invitational at the top of the team leaderboard. Five Huskies rank among the top 13 in the individual standings, led by sophomore Teddy Lin, who tops the field at 8-under.
The Huskies played two rounds Monday and will wrap up the tournament at Eugene Country Club Tuesday, with the third and final round. Washington scored a 4-under 280 in the first round and a 272 in the second, and will take a four-stroke lead over Utah into the third round. No. 3 Arizona State is third, 26 strokes back of the Huskies at 10 over par.
"It was a really good day by our guys today," UW head coach Alan Murray said. "Conditions were not easy. It was raining and cold most of the day. The course has taken a lot of rain so was pretty soggy and not its usual pristine self.
Lin shot consecutive rounds of 4-under 67 on the par-71 Eugene Country Club course, putting him 8-under. Huskies shot six rounds under par, as just nine of 91 golfers in the tournament finished the second round at even par or better.
"The boys played some awesome golf and made a lot of birdies. I'm really proud of them!" Murray said. "Teddy was so impressive. He hit so many good shots, he putted really well, and he managed himself extremely well. He continues to get better each week and hopefully he can have another good day tomorrow."
UW senior RJ Manke shot a 67 in the first round, bolstered by an eagle-2 on No. 17. Mar rnke carded a 69 in the second round, placing him alone in third on the leaderboard at 6-under for the tournament.
"RJ was his usual self," Murray said. "He played great and showed his maturity and class on so many occasions today. He continues to set a great example."
Junior Petr Hruby, who was 3-over in the opening round, rebounded in the second, shooting a 68 to finish round two at even par for the tournament, tying him for sixth place.
Junior Bo Peng shot an opening-round 75, but then improved by seven shots in his second round with a 68, finishing the day 1-over and tied for 11th.
"Petr and Bo had excellent second round 68s after tough opening rounds by their standard," Murray commented. "Petr made a great birdie on No. 1 2 to finish off the day and give us an extra shot cushion headed into the final round. Bo played great in round two also with five birdies."
Senior Noah Woolsey joined his teammates in the top 13, finishing the second round at 2-over, having shot a pair of 72s Monday.
"Noah came up big for us in round one after a tough start to his round," Murray said. He ground out a 1-over par with two late birdies and I feel like that gave us some momentum heading into round two."
Playing as individuals, Taehoon Song finished the day in a tie for 18th at 3-over (71-74) and Aidan O'Hagan was tied for 60th at 9-over (79-72).
Washington was the only team to finish the first round under par, notching a 4-under 280. In the second, the Huskies and Utes both pulled away from the rest of the field. Utah, which was second after one round with a 2-over 286, turned in a 14-under 270 in the second. Only UW and Utah were under par in the second round.
"We need to play well tomorrow to finish the job off," Murray concluded. "We'll get some rest tonight and be ready for the challenge that tomorrow brings. Go Dawgs!"
