October 31, 2022 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – Washington gymnastics head coach Jen Llewellyn has announced the Huskies' 2023 meet schedule.
The schedule will feature four dual meets at Alaska Airlines Arena as well as a preseason showcase for the Dawgs in early December.
Coach Llewellyn is excited for this upcoming season of competition, especially since this year's schedule is unique for the program.
"We're getting on the podium three times in the regular season before we tackle Pac-12s," Llewellyn said. "Having this experience will be great for our group before heading into the postseason.
"We're also traveling to a few places we've never been before. This schedule will be great exposure to non-conference teams in the Big Ten and SEC that will help prepare us to be our best come the end of the year."
The 2023 team has named themselves the 'Divine 49' this year, as the squad is the 49th team in UW gymnastics program history.
Washington will showcase its 2023 GymDawg squad on Dec. 6 with the Purple & Gold Showcase at Alaska Airlines Arena at 6 p.m. The Huskies will then hit the road for back-to-back meets on Jan. 6 and Jan. 14 when they will face off with UCLA, Minnesota, and Boise State.
The 2023 team will host its first home dual meet against UCLA on Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
The Huskies will travel to Utah on Jan. 28 before making their way back home to host the Beavers for a dual meet with Oregon State on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.
Washington hits a quick turnaround as they travel to Arizona on Feb. 10 and Stanford on Feb. 13. A week later, the Huskies face the Stanford Cardinal once again on Feb. 20 at home.
The Huskies will then compete in Baton Rouge at the P&G Classic on Friday, March 3 against opponents LSU, Cal, and George Washington.
Next up will be a quad meet at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas on Sunday, March 12 with host Texas Woman's, Florida, and NC State.
This season, the Pac-12 Championships will be held at the Maverik Center in West Valley, Utah on March 18. NCAA Regionals action will span March 29-April 1 at university sites in Denver, Colo., Norman, Oklahoma, Los Angeles, Calif., and Pittsburgh, Pa.
NCAA Championships will be held April 13-15 at Dickie's Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Returning for the GymDawgs are fifth-year seniors Amara Cunningham and Brenna Brooks, along with seniors Morgan Bowles, Kennedi Davis, and grad student Isa Weiss.
Cunningham is not only anticipating her final year in a UW leotard with enthusiasm, but being able to share the stage with so many new faces.
"I am super excited for this season, and just having seven new additions to the team," Cunningham said. "Between the freshmen and transfer (Hadley) we will see a number of new routines that will not only build to our lineups but push each and every one of us to become better every day.
The team cohesion, along with the collective goal to succeed this season, are both points the GymDawgs will continue to improve on as the season rolls out.
"As a team, I know we will continue to build to the progress and records we broke last season and come out as a top 20 team," Cunningham said. "Our team chemistry is also amazing and will allow us to perform exactly how we want."
Washington welcomes seven newcomers this year, one of which is grad transfer Hadley Roberts.
The freshman class includes Emily Innes, Caitlin McWilliams, Thu Nguyen, Olivia Oppegard, Emma Schrady, and Lilly Tubbs.
Coach Llewellyn is looking forward to getting this group of new GymDawgs in the facility, especially with the quality of competition they will face this year.
"We have a fairly large underclassman group this year and a lot of new faces," Llewellyn shared. "Getting them experience early on is going to be so beneficial for their growth as a GymDawg. I'm so excited to see our growth this year."
Returning for Washington are Ashley Blum, Bowles, Brooks, Cunningham, Davis, Skylar Killough-Wilhelm, Deiah Moody, Lana Navarro, Taylor Russon, Weiss, and Gabi Wickman.
Make sure to come check out your 2023 GymDawgs starting Dec. 6 at the Purple & Gold Showcase in Alaska Airlines Arena at 6 p.m.
Themes for each home meet and broadcast information will be announced at a later date.
