Huskies Earn Sunday Sweep Of Arizona
October 23, 2022 | Volleyball
SEATTLE β Washington served up a sweep of Arizona on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena, riding nine aces and outstanding work by its outside hitters to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-15 win. The Huskies (15-5, 7-3 Pac-12) hit .405 as a team to rebound from Friday's tough five set setback against Arizona State.
Β
"You saw some of the things we're known for in terms of serving pressure and clean siding out. Things that we know are our strengths that showed up today," Head Coach Keegan Cook remarked. "That kind of match we'll do pretty well, both teams were having offensive success but we were in a nice rhythm siding out. I was really impressed by all three of our outside hitters, their ability to hit for high efficiencies and play really clean."
Β
The OH trio of Emoni Bush, Claire Hoffman, and Audra Wilmes was nearly faultless today. Bush had 15 kills and hit .462 while firing four aces. Hoffman had 12 kills on a .375 percentage with two aces. Wilmes had her best offensive match as the starting opposite, with eight kills and no errors on a .615 percentage.
Β
Ella May Powell had 31 assists and moved into fifth in Pac-12 history in career assists with 5,785. Lauren Bays had eight digs to anchor the back row.
Β
The Dawgs needed their hot hitting as Arizona also made few mistakes, hitting .321. But Arizona missed 12 serves while UW missed only six, and the Wildcats had two aces to the Huskies' nine. Washington had one more block, 4.0 to 3.0, and Arizona held an edge in digs, 34 to 26.
Β
UP NEXT: Washington remains at home to start the second half of Pac-12 play hosting California on Friday, Oct. 28, in a 7 p.m. showdown.
Β
SET ONE: The first UW kill came on the fifth point to make it 3-2 from Emoni Bush. Sophie Summers had a solo stuff for a 4-2 lead. Hoffman pushed the early lead to 8-4 with her first kill. An Arizona error made it 11-6 and UA took timeout. Hoffman finished again for 13-7 and the 'Cats burned their last timeout. Summers tipped one in for 15-10 Dawgs. Arizona cut the lead to three but Wilmes had a kill and then assisted Summers on a block for 17-12. Wilmes connected from the right side and then rotated back and aced Arizona to push it to 21-14. Hoffman had an ace to get to set point at 24-15 and UW won it on its second chance with a kill from Bush.
Β
The Huskies hit .346 in the first set with five kills on six swings from Hoffman.
Β
SET TWO: The teams traded sideouts to start the second until consecutive kills from Bush put the Dawgs up for the first time at 4-3. Wilmes hammered one from the right to make it 7-7. Arizona then scored three in a row to put the Dawgs in a small hole. Hoffman put one down to snap the run for 8-10. After an Arizona point, the Dawgs got back moving with a 4-0 run on kills by Grote and Bush, a Wildcat error, and another Bush kill bump set from Bays. A Bush kill and three Arizona errors played in another 4-1 run for a 16-13 Husky lead and UA took timeout. Grote had a solo stuff and then Powell hit Hoffman for a smash to make it 20-15. Arizona clawed back with three straight before Hoffman finished for 21-18. The Wildcats got within one, but Bush delivered two straight to get back to 23-20. Arizona closed again to 23-22, but Bush answered once again, getting the final two kills from the left to take it, 25-22.
Β
Arizona hit .353 in the set but the Dawgs were better at .424. Bush racked up nine kills in the set, on 13 swings, without an error, while Bays had five digs and Powell had 13 assists.
Β
SET THREE: Bush had a back row rocket for 2-1 to start the third. Bays stepped up with two straight aces for a 5-2 lead and Arizona took the early timeout. Wilmes crushed a swing up the left sideline for 7-4, and then Bush had two straight aces to build a 9-4 lead. Wilmes hit down the overpass off a serve from Sianna Houghton for 11-6. Hoffman tooled the block for 12-8. Wilmes and Bush added finishes for 14-9 and then another ace from Hoffman made it 15-9. The Dawgs put it away with a run on Bush's serve, where she had two aces to extend the lead to 21-12. Another Wilmes blast made it 22-13. Molly Wilson subbed in late for Powell and assisted a kill by Hoffman to get to match point at 24-15. Grote had a solo block in the middle to end it, 25-15.
