UW Men Ramp Up Spring Season At Southwestern Invitational
January 22, 2022 | Men's Golf
After more than three months off following a successful fall season, the No. 21-ranked Washington men's golf team returns to action this Monday through Wednesday at the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
The tournament, hosted by Pepperdine University, will be played on the Lakes and Oaks courses at North Ranch. The tournament will air on the Golf Channel each day, beginning at 1:30 p.m. PT each day.
Last fall, the Huskies won three of the five tournaments in which they played, taking top honors at the Husky Invitational, the Fighting Irish Classic, and the Oregon State Invitational. RJ Manke won the individual title at two of those tournaments and finished in the top three in all five.
"It's a big tournament to start the spring season but an ideal way to begin our journey to the postseason," said UW head coach Alan Murray. "It will be also be on television, and that is great preparation for what we hope to see at NCAA finals – elite competition and playing in front of the cameras."
Washington's lineup for the tournament: RJ Manke, Noah Woolsey, Petr Hruby, Chuan-Tai Lin, Taehoon Song.
"RJ and Noah have experience of the golf course, and I believe that will be a big help for our guys," Murray said. "RJ had four years at Pepperdine and will be a great resource for our guys as they prepare how to play the golf course."
The field includes (Golfstat rankings) No. 3 Arizona State, No. 6 Pepperdine, No. 8 Texas, No. 13 Georgia, No. 14 Wake Forest, as well as Pac-12 rivals USC and UCLA, among others.
"We will see some really strong teams this week and it is a great opportunity for us as a team and also individually to see how we stack up," said Murray.
Murray will not be on hand in person.
"I am sad that I won't be there to witness it as I have tested positive for COVID and, like our supporters, will watch it on TV," Murray explained. "I'm really grateful that our volunteer assistant coach, Scott Alexander, is able to step in and he always does a great job coaching our guys.
"Our guys are prepared and their games are in good shape," Murray added. "I'm excited to see how we deal with the challenge."
