July 19, 2021 | Football
The watch list for the 2021 Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the nation's most outstanding defensive player, was announced on Monday, and a pair of Huskies were named as prospective recipients. Defensive back Trent McDuffie and linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio are among 90 candidates for one of the nation's top collegiate honors.
McDuffie and Ulofoshio have already been named to preseason All-America teams by numerous publications.
Pro Football Focus has ranked Ulofoshio as the nation's top returning inside linebacker. The sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska, by way of Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, earned honorable mention All-America and second-team All-Pac-12 last year, when he notched 47 tackles, four passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble in the Huskies' four games.
McDuffie, a sophomore from Westminster, Calif., was also a second-team All-Pac-12 selection last season, when he started all four games for the Huskies' Pac-12 North Division champion team.
The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former standout at the University of Pennsylvania and with the Philadelphia Eagles. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
The winner of the 2021 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 9, 2021.
