Wong’s Season Ends In NCAA Championships
May 23, 2021 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. – Husky senior Vanessa Wong saw her stellar 2021 season come to a close today in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships. This season, Wong achieved a career-high No. 24 singles ranking and made the All-Pac-12 First Team for the first time.
But today, making her second career NCAA Singles appearance, Wong was unable to upset 8th-seeded McCartney Kessler, the No. 1 singles player for Florida, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
Wong and Kessler traded service breaks early in the first set and Wong held a 3-2 lead, but Kessler then won four games in a row to take the first set, 6-3. In the second set, Wong broke for a 2-1 lead, but Kessler quickly answered back with a break of her own and took the lead. Wong had break chances in two more Kessler service games during the set, but couldn't convert, and Kessler pulled away to win, 6-2.
Wong finishes up her year with a 17-5 singles record.
