SEATTLE - The Huskies make a final push for NCAA tournament qualification this week with a final regular season challenge at San Diego on Thursday, Apr. 22, one day before starting the Pac-12 Championships, which this season are also held in San Diego at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Huskies and Toreros were originally scheduled to play on Tuesday but the match had to be pushed back two days.
The NCAA Selection Show is coming up on Monday, May 3. Prior to that the Huskies (14-6, 5-5 Pac-12) will try to extend their current five-match winning streak as long as possible. San Diego (13-3) will be a major challenge as the Toreros have won eight in a row including a 6-0 win over Washington State on Wednesday and a 4-3 win over Oregon earlier in the streak. Their only three losses came against ranked Pac-12 teams Cal, USC, and UCLA. USD's No. 1 singles player, Solymar Colling, is ranked 57th in the ITA singles rankings.
The Huskies moved up to No. 44 in the ITA computerized rankings this week, and to No. 44 in the coaches poll. Vanessa Wong is ranked 43rd in singles.
With a 5-5 record, the Huskies were tied for fifth in the Pac-12 regular season standings, but ended up with the No. 7 seed for the tournament based on the tiebreaker. The Huskies will face 10th-seed Arizona in the first round on Friday at 10 a.m. The teams played a fantastic match in the regular season, with Washington earning a 4-3 win in Seattle thanks to Sedona Gallagher pulling out a marathon third set tiebreak match at No. 3 singles. The winner will advance to play No. 2 seed Stanford on Saturday at 12 noon.
