Huskies Come Out With Win In Battle Of Top-Five Teams
March 24, 2021 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The #4 Washington Huskies made it back-to-back wins over top-five opponents, taking down the #3 Oregon State Beavers 2-1. Gio Miglietti and Ryan Sailor scored early to give the Huskies a big lead. Charlie Ostrem had his first career two-assist game, while Dylan Teves and Kendall Burks also earned assists.
Washington is 8-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the Pac-12, good for first place in the Pac-12 conference. This is the second time the Huskies have started at least 8-1-0 under head coach Jamie Clark and the second year in a row they have done so.
This was just the third time the Huskies faced top-five opposition in back-to-back games and first time since 2009. It was also the first time since rankings became available in 1995 that the Huskies have defeated top-five foes in back-to-back games. Washington is now 3-2-0 against opponents ranked in the nation's top five since the start of 2019.
The Huskies jumped out to a big lead early on, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes to put Oregon State in a big hole. Washington nearly had a third goal in the 29th minute, only for the offsides flag to negate what looked to be Tyler Smith's first of the season.
That first-half flurry by the Huskies was just the beginning of an excellent all-around game by Washington. Six different Huskies put shots on goal in the game. Oregon State managed only one shot in the final 20 minutes against Washington's staunch defense. In net, Sam Fowler made six saves, a season high.
