Huskies Win Pac-12 Opener Behind Plain's 16 Ks
March 19, 2021 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #6 Washington Huskies won their Pac-12 opener 2-1 over the #7 Arizona Wildcats in a pitcher's duel. Washington struck early for runs in each of the first two innings, then rode strong defense and a masterful Gabbie Plain performance to the win. The Huskies are 21-2 on the season after tonight's win.
Now the nation's leader in strikeouts after a career-best 16-strikeout performance, Plain allowed only three baserunners all game long. Plain retired the first 12 batters she faced, ten by strikeout, before allowing a solo home run in the fifth. Plain bounced right back, striking out the side after that homer and only allowing one other Wildcat to reach scoring position.
That lone Arizona threat came in the sixth, with the Wildcats putting two runners on base for the first time all game. Plain needed just one pitch to retire Jessie Harper on an easy groundout to the circle, ending Arizona's only opportunity with runners on base all game long. Plain threw a perfect 1-2-3 seventh to end the game.
Offensively, Baylee Klingler and Kelley Lynch were big for the Huskies. Klingler doubled in the first and scored the game's first run. Lynch ripped a solo home run in the second and nearly had another in the sixth, settling for a single on a line drive that hit high off the wall in dead centerfield.
Washington and Arizona will play two games tomorrow, with game one set for 3:30 pm on the Pac-12 Network and game two immediately following.
