SEATTLE - Looking to break into the Pac-12 win column, the Husky women's tennis team hosts two big duals against Arizona and 26th-ranked Arizona State this Friday and Sunday. Weather forecasts point to the Huskies getting outside on Friday for the first time at the Bill Quillian Stadium. First serve Friday will be 1:30 p.m. and the match with the Sun Devils starts at 12 noon.
Despite playing well enough to win in two 4-3 nailbiters against Top-25 opponents, the Huskies are looking to break a three-match skid on Friday. Last week, the Dawgs were one point short against then-No. 16 USC, splitting the singles matches. Sixth-ranked UCLA then defeated the Huskies by a 6-1 count, though the top-three singles matches all went to third set super-tiebreaks, with UCLA winning two of the three. Sedona Gallagher was 2-0 for the Huskies at No. 3 singles last week, and Vanessa Wong earned another ranked win over USC's No. 1 player, and then came up just short in the 10-point breaker to UCLA's seventh-ranked singles player.
The Huskies have not seen the Wildcats and the Sun Devils since the 2019 season, when UW had home wins over both schools.
Arizona is 8-4 and is coming off a 4-3 home loss to Oregon this past Sunday. Arizona won straight set matches at No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 singles against the Ducks. Sophomore Kayla Wilkins has gone 3-6 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No. 2 singles for UA. Senior Gitte Heynemans is leading the squad with a 10-2 dual record at the five and six spots. Emily Maxfield is ranked 90th for Arizona but has only played twice this year, both times at No. 6 singles.
Arizona State opened conference play with a 4-0 shutout of the Ducks last weekend, improving to 7-3 on the year. The 26th-ranked Sun Devils are led by 37th-ranked Ilze Hattingh at the No. 1 singles spot who is 5-2 on the season thus far. She and Lauryn John-Baptiste were the 2019 Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year and the pair are two-time All-Americans. Hatingh and John-Baptiste are 50th in the 2021 doubles rankings, but Hattingh is also ranked 21st with Tereza Kolarova. Senior Sammi Hampton is also ranked 115th in singles. Arizona State has a common opponent with UW as the Sun Devils lost a 4-2 match to Baylor, who beat the Huskies, 4-3.
