Huskies Sweep Vikings, Face Cougars Friday

SEATTLE – Washington women's tennis set up a showdown with rival Washington State on Friday by not looking past Portland State on Thursday. The Huskies improved to 6-0 on the year with a 7-0 sweep of the Vikings, losing just one set on the day.
Vanessa Wong and Sarah-Maude Fortin both improved to 6-0 in singles with the first two singles wins for the Huskies. 74th-ranked Wong won the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-0, over Lotti Meszaros. Fortin, the freshman from Montreal, moved up to the No. 2 spot for the first time and defeated Capucine Sanoner, 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Zoey Weil had clinching honors today with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 4 match against Emily Rees. Then junior Sedona Gallagher wrapped up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 against Makota Ohara.
The last two matches were at five and six. At No. 5, freshman Yolanda Lin fought back from a first set loss with a 6-1 second set win and then a 10-3 win in the third set tiebreak. Fellow freshman Tara Chilton then finished off her win at No. 6, turning back PSU's Gerda Upenience in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
The Huskies controlled the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Wong and Fortin teamed up for a 6-3 win over Sanoner/Ohara at No. 1. Weil and Chilton clinched with a 6-2 win at No. 3 over Ramirez/Upeniece. Then at the No. 2 spot, Gallagher and Lin won 6-3 over Meszaros/Rees.
Washington will now take on rival Washington State tomorrow in another 12 noon dual at the Nordstrom.
