Dawgs in Seventh After Shortened Day One at Trinity Forest Invitational
February 01, 2021 | Women's Golf
DALLAS – The University of Washington women's golf team opened up its season on Monday at the Trinity Forest Invitational and recorded a score of 34-over 300 which currently has them in seventh place. Play at the event was stopped Monday evening due to darkness before teams were able to finish all 36 holes. The second round will be completed Tuesday morning and immediately lead in to the third and final round.
"For our first event in over 300 days with two freshmen in the lineup, I thought we played okay in the morning, but in the afternoon we struggled and couldn't get out of own way," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "This is a very different type of course, it's a links style, and we weren't able to execute the way we wanted to. It's a learning process and we thought everyone hung in there really well. I was really pleased with Brittany's first round, coming back on that front nine to get to 3-under and Rino had a solid day with her five birdies in the second round. We'll see what we can learn from today to apply to tomorrow. If we keep learning, we'll be alright."
Senior Rino Sasaki led the charge for the Dawgs as she finished the day tied for 15th at 6-over par. The Huskies were able to get through 17 holes in round two and will wrap up the last hole of the round in the morning. Sasaki opened the day with a 4-over 76 which featured 12 pars and one birdie. She followed that by knocking in a team-high five birdies in round two before play was suspended and open up on Tuesday sitting at 2-over.
Sitting one stroke behind her is sophomore Brittany Kwon at 7-over, which places her tied for 19th. Kwon had the Huskies' best scorecard in round one as she turned in a 1-over 73 thanks to a clean front nine that featured three of her four birdies in the round. In the second round, Kwon is at 6-over, but did add three more birdies to lead the Huskies with seven overall.
Freshmen Camille Boyd and Stefanie Deng got their first collegiate playing experience on Monday and are sitting at 10-over and 11-over, respectively, which currently places them in the top 40. Boyd's first round included three birdies while Deng posted a 4-over 76 over the first 18. They will both start Tuesday's delayed second round at 7-under. Rounding out the UW lineup was junior Martha Lewis who is at 16-over par through 35 holes.
"It was fun out there playing all together as a team in the fivesome," added Mulflur. "It's a very different format and something I've never done as a coach in actual competition. The energy between everyone was really good and it was a great way to kick the season off, playing together."
Continuous play begins at 6:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday with the final holes of round two then immediately starting round three.
