Newton Named To Doak Walker Watch List
July 15, 2020 | Football
Washington's Richard Newton has been named to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation's top college running back.
Newton, a sophomore from Lancaster, Calif., is one of several returning Huskies vying for the starting tailback spot this coming season. Last year, he distinguished himself by scoring 10 rushing touchdowns, the fifth-highest total in the Pac-12 Conference, despite not starting any games.
For the year, he rushed for 498 yards on 117 carries, and also caught a touchdown pass. His 6.6 points per game were 10th in the conference, sixth among non-kickers.
The Doak Walker Award, presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum, was first awarded in 1990, when Washington's Greg Lewis was the inaugural winner.
