UW In Third After Round Two of Bandon Dunes Championship
March 09, 2020 | Men's Golf
BANDON, ORE. – The No. 11 University of Washington men's golf team finished the second round of the Bandon Dunes Championship in third place on Monday with a score of 1-under 567 (286-281). The Dawgs are nine strokes off the lead, held by Oregon State at 10-under 558.
"It was a yo-yo kind of day for us again today," said head coach Alan Murray. "On this course, you have to hit high quality shots because the bad shots can get you punished on this kind of links course. Our guys played a lot of really good golf with some mistakes but overall, we just have to be dialed in mentally and be ready to make some moves tomorrow."
Washington was led by senior Henry Lee who climbed into sixth place overall following his second round score of 2-under 69. He sits at 3-under 139 overall (70-69). Monday's 69 round for Lee was his 12th sub-70 score this season over 22 rounds. Lee opened with three pars and a birdie before his first blemish. He bounced back quickly on the next hole with a birdie followed by four more birdies after the turn en route to his 2-under. Lee is just two strokes behind first place held by Devon Bling of UCLA (5-under 137).
Following him was freshman Bo Peng who jumped four spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 16th with his even-par 142. Peng carded a 1-under 70 on Monday thanks to an almost perfect scorecard featuring just one bogey. He added two birdies and made par on every other hole to improve upon his day one score by two strokes.
"Bo was extremely steady out there today," added Murray. "That's the kind of player he is, very mature and definitely doesn't play like a freshman, excited to see what he brings tomorrow."
Junior Noah Woolsey is tied for 23rd at 1-over 143 (70-73) while sophomore Paul Margolis is tied for 41st with his 4-over 146 (77-69). Margolis made the biggest improvement from round one to two as he jumped 37 spots on the leader board with his seventh sub-70 round of the year. Margolis went 2-under 69 on Monday turning in six birdies on his scorecard. Rounding out the UW lineup was freshman Petr Hruby, who is tied for 49th with his 5-over 147 (74-73).
"Despite a couple of bogeys, Paul played a lot of really good golf today," said Murray.
On the individual side, junior Jan Schneider sits tied for 34th at 3-over 145 (72-73), sophomore Ranveer Grewal is tied for 41st with his 4-over 146 (74-72), freshman Nate Anderson is tied for 69th (9-over 151) while senior Shamu Bodhidatta is tied for 74th at 10-over 152 (75-77).
