GymDawgs Earn Six All-Pac-12 Awards
March 25, 2020 | Gymnastics
SAN FRANCISCO - Five Washington GymDawgs brought home six All-Pac-12 awards today as the conference announced its yearly awards. The six awards ties a program record, achieved in both 1986 and 2001. Evanni Roberson, Kristyn Hoffa, Maya Washington, Madison Copiak, and Geneva Thompson all earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors.
Only once before in program history have five different GymDawgs earned All-Pac-12 honors: in 2008, when Haley Bogart, Ashley Houghting, Raimey Iselin, Nikki Waiss, and Samantha Wailor did so. Washington has never had more individuals earn All-Pac-12 awards nor had more total All-Pac-12 awards in a single season.
Roberson earned First Team honors on both beam and all-around, her third consecutive season earning at least one All-Pac-12 honor. The first GymDawg ever to earn a perfect ten on beam, Roberson twice had perfect scores this year, becoming the fourth GymDawg ever to record multiple perfect scores in their career. Roberson joins Hailey Burleson and Allison Northey as the only GymDawgs since the turn of the century to earn multiple All-Pac-12 honors on all-around in their careers. Burleson and Yumi Mordre are the only other GymDawgs in program history to earn multiple All-Pac-12 honors on beam in their careers.
This is Hoffa's first All-Pac-12 honor of her career, coming on floor. A fifth-year senior, Hoffa finished 2020 with scores of 9.900 or higher on floor in eight consecutive meets. That included a career-best mark of 9.975 early in the season. Hoffa entered the year with a career-high of 9.925: she surpassed that mark six times in 2020's ten meets. Hoffa is the ninth Husky to earn All-Pac-12 honors on floor since the turn of the century.
Joining Hoffa on the All-Pac-12 Floor First Team is Maya Washington, who earned her first career All-Pac-12 honor. That duo is the first pair of GymDawgs to earn All-Pac-12 on floor in the same season with 2001 and just the third duo ever to do so, joining Christi Robell and Nancy Rhinesmith in 1984 and Lanna Apisukh and Mandi Klug in 2001. Washington had just one floor score under 9.850 all year long and broke the 9.900 mark six times.
Copiak earned her first All-Pac-12 honor for her bars routine. Only one of Copiak's ten bars routines this season earned a score under 9.800. She is the third GymDawg in the last four years to earn All-Pac-12 honors on bars. Four times this season Copiak earned the event title on bars, moving her to fifth in Washington history in career bars event titles.
Thompson is the first GymDawg since Amanda Cline in 2011 to earn All-Pac-12 Vault First Team. After two years of competition, Thompson has still never had a vault score under 9.800 in her career. This season, she had three vaults earn scores of 9.900 or higher, including a score of 9.950 that was Washington's highest since 2014. In just over 20 career meets, Thompson has already earned seven vault event titles.
