March 24, 2020 | Gymnastics
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Washington GymDawgs earned five All-American awards Tuesday, as announced by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association. Madison Copiak, Kristyn Hoffa, Evanni Roberson, and Maya Washington all earned All-American honors. That set a school record for the most individuals to earn All-American honors in a single season. The five All-American awards has been accomplished just twice in Washington history: in 1987, when the GymDawgs earned five, and in 1998, with a program-record six All-American honors.
Before this season, Washington had had just seven different gymnasts ever earn All-American honors, totaling 22 All-American honors. Only three GymDawgs had earned All-American honors since the turn of the century before four did so this season. Only once before, in 1997, had Washington had more than two individuals earn All-American honors in the same year.
Copiak earned All-American honors on bars for the second time in her career, also doing so in 2017. Copiak is the fourth GymDawg ever to earn multiple All-American honors: she joins Klara Kudilkova, Tiffany Simpson, and Yumi Mordre in that regard. Copiak earned a score of 9.800 or higher on nine of her ten bars routines this season. Five times she earned scores of 9.900 or higher, including in each of the last three meets of the season.
Roberson earned All-American honors on both beam and all-around this season, becoming the first GymDawg to earn multiple All-American honors since Kudilkova in 1998. Roberson is the fourth GymDawg ever to earn multiple All-American honors in the same season and joins Copiak as the fifth GymDawg to ever earn multiple All-American honors in their careers. Mordre is the only other GymDawg to do so on both beam and all-around in the same year, doing so in 1987 and 1988. This year, Roberson earned the first two perfect tens on beam in Washington history. She has the most beam and the most all-around event titles in Washington history.
Hoffa had the second-highest average floor score in Washington history this year at 9.905, finishing just behind Carly Dockendorf's 9.906 average in 2004. Her five individual event titles on floor this season are the third-most in school history, while her nine career titles are the third-most in school history. Hoffa had eight consecutive floor scores of 9.900 or higher to end the year, with four scores of 9.950 or higher this season. She was named a First Team All-American.
Maya Washington also earned All-American honors on floor, making Washington and Hoffa the school's first duo of Floor All-Americans since 1997, when Kudilkova and Simpson earned that honor. Washington had scores of 9.850 or higher in all but one meet this season on floor. The senior had an average score of 9.890, third-highest in school history.
