Plain Throws One-Hitter As Huskies Win 2-1
February 08, 2020 | Softball
ATLANTA – Gabbie Plain threw an absolute gem as the #1 Washington Huskies defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2-1 Saturday. Plain did not allow a hit until one out in the seventh and only allowed three baserunners all game: a walk in the fourth, that single, and an error in the seventh.
Plain was just about unhittable in the game. One ball reached the outfield, a routine popout to rightfield in the third. Otherwise, Plain induced groundout after groundout as she mowed through the Yellow Jacket order. The junior would strike out six in the game, retiring nine straight at one point and 14 of the first 15.
It was the top of the order that helped power the Huskies to victory. Sis Bates, Morganne Flores, and Jadelyn Allchin went a combined 6-for-12, with Bates and Flores driving in the game's only runs. Kelley Lynch's double would be the catalyst, as pinch-runner Megan Vandegrift would come around to score on Bates' triple a few batters later.
The Huskies threatened over and over, with the leadoff hitter reaching base in five of the first six innings. The Huskies had the bases loaded in the third and could not score before finally breaking the tie in the fifth thanks to some big extra-base hits by Lynch and Bates.
Washington finishes the Buzz Classic tomorrow with one game, against Furman at 3:00 pm PT. Fans are encouraged to park in the family housing parking deck on 10th Street as regular parking availability will be limited due to a Georgia Tech basketball game scheduled at the same time.
