Bates Named Female Sports Star Of The Year
February 06, 2020 | Softball
SEATTLE - Sis Bates was named the Female Sports Star of the Year at the 85th annual MTR Western Seattle Sports Star of the Year awards. Bates is the fourth Husky softball player to earn the award, joining Ali Aguilar, Danielle Lawrie, and Becky Newbry. Washington's 2009 squad also earned the award as a team following their national championship.
This was the second consecutive year that Bates had been nominated for the award. In 2018 and 2019, she was named an All-American and led the Huskies to Women's College World Series trips. She has hit over .380 in each of the last two years while earning back-to-back Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year awards. She is one of three players in conference history to earn that award multiple times and the first since 2010.
Bates is the first Husky to earn a Sports Star of the Year award since Ali Aguilar earned Female Sports Star of the Year in 2017 and Husky Football's Dante Pettis earned Male Sports Star that same year. Since the inception of the Female Sports Star of the Year award in 1994, only 11 other Huskies have earned the award. Only 32 other Huskies have ever been honored with a Sports Star of the Year award since the first was handed out in 1935.
The Huskies start there 2020 season tomorrow at the Buzz Classic in Atlanta. Washington has made three consecutive WCWS trips for just the second time in school history and is defending its 2020 Pac-12 title after leading the conference with a 20-4 record last season.
