SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.– The University of Washington women's golf team finished day one of the Bruin/Wave Invitational in fifth after carding a score of 22-over 598 (296-302) following 36 holes on Monday. The Dawgs were led by sophomore Martha Lewis who is tied for eighth at 3-over 147 (74-73).
"I was proud of how the team battled today," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We played well for 12 holes in both rounds but we just gave away too many shots over our last six holes in each round. We will work to figure that out and get after it tomorrow."
Lewis had a solid day, finishing at two-over par during her first 18 holes with two birdies and a few blemishes but she followed that with two more birdies to finish at 1-over 73. The sophomore is 11 strokes off the lead, held by Kelly Sim of Northwestern (8-under, 136).
Just behind her is freshman Winnie Ng who is tied for 20th after posting a 7-over 151 (73-78). She carded a 1-over in her first round with an almost clean scorecard before finishing at 6-over during her second 18 of the day. Junior Rino Sasaki will head into Tuesday's final round at 7-over 151 as well following her rounds of 75-76).
Rounding out the UW contingent were freshman Brittany Kwon who is tied for 24th at 8-over 152 (77-75) and senior Karen Miyamoto at 10-over 154 (74-80) as she is tied for 34th.
