Husky Beach Roster Set In Sand
February 13, 2020 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – While ideal beach weather has yet to arrive in the Pacific Northwest, Washington's 2020 beach roster has been firmed up, with some new additions from the indoor squad and four new beach-only players. The Huskies now boast a healthy 16-player roster, half of which are new to the squad this season.
Washington is now just over two weeks away from opening up its season down in Tucson, Ariz. at the end of February. That will be followed by trips to Los Angeles; Honolulu; San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and Palo Alto, Calif. before the first home dates on Apr. 10-11 at Alki Beach. That will be followed by a road trip to Boise, Idaho and then the Pac-12 Championships in L.A.
"This is the biggest group we've had and everybody contributes something," said Head Coach Steve Whitaker. "I think we're going to surprise some teams at the 3-4-5 spots."
There are eight returners back for 2020: senior Shayne McPherson, juniors Kara Bajema, Emma Calle, Avie Niece, and Cailin Onosko, and sophomores Natalie Robinson, Kyra Petersen, and Callie Weber. McPherson goes into her senior season third all-time in wins with 40 and needs seven wins to break the school record. Bajema ranks ninth in school history with 22 wins in her two seasons thus far.
The beach-only newcomers include a couple senior transfers: Carlyle Nusbaum from Lipscomb and Addie Picha from San Diego. Nusbaum was a two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017 and finished her indoor career with 1,715 career kills. Picha was a two-time AVCA All-America honorable mention for the Toreros as a middle blocker and a two-time All-WCC First Team pick. She was a teammate of Kristen Gengenbacher, who played one year of beach for the Dawgs in 2019 and played at the No. 1 spot.
Two more sophomore transfers join the mix this season. Chloe Loreen, a Seattle native who attended Santa Clara, playing two years indoors for the Broncos, including appearing in every set as a sophomore and leading the team with 416 digs. Loreen also played a full beach season in 2019, going a combined 6-11 at the 1, 2, and 3 spots for SCU.
Cassidy Schilling heads north from Arizona State where she was on the beach roster the past two seasons but has yet to compete. Schilling is a native of Moorpark, Calif.
The one true freshman beach-only player is local product Scarlett Dahl, who attended the Northwest School and played club for Da Kine VC and Sudden Impact VC.
Sophomore indoor players Shannon Crenshaw and Claire Hoffman are headed to the beach for the first time this season, along with indoor freshman Sianna Houghton.
