Two Big Innings For UW In 12-3 Win
February 12, 2020 | Softball
ORLANDO, Fla. – Two huge innings were enough for the #1 Washington Huskies to defeat the UCF Knights 12-3 Wednesday night. Washington scored five runs in the second, then seven in the seventh. Washington's 1-2-3-4 hitters all had multiple hits in the game as the Huskies moved to 6-0.
Morganne Flores and Taryn Atlee had three hits each, with Flores hitting her second home run of the season. Atlee scored twice, as did Livy Schiele, who was making her season debut.
Washington's early big inning put the Huskies in a comfortable position. Washington scored five times in the second inning, all with two outs, to take the lead for good. Another big inning, this time in the seventh, put a UCF rally to bed. After the first batter of the inning grounded out, Washington would put six straight batters on base and ten of the next 11. The Huskies batted around in the inning for the second time this season.
Washington's defense came to play when they were called upon as well. SilentRain Espinoza made a particularly good play after a ricochet off Gabbie Plain's glove in the second inning. The sophomore grabbed the ball in stride after tracking the bounce well, then fired a bullet to first just barely ahead of the runner.
Plain started and retired the game's first six batters. She would pitch six innings before ceding the circle to Pat Moore for the seventh. Plain struck out eight batters in the game, while Moore threw a shutout inning to end the game.
Washington will begin the Clearwater Elite Invitational tomorrow as they play #9 Alabama at 1:00 pm PT on ESPN2.
