Bates, Flores, Plain Named To Player Of The Year Watchlist
January 29, 2020 | Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY - Three Washington Huskies were named to USA Softball's initial preseason watchlist for the Collegiate Player of the Year award. Sis Bates, Morganne Flores, and Gabbie Plain all earned their way onto the list for the Huskies, with all three having earned All-American honors after the 2019 season.
This is the third straight year that Washington has had multiple players on the preseason watchlist, with nine such honorees in that time. Washington has had at least one player on the watchlist in 17 consecutive seasons. Plain joins Danielle Lawrie and Kaitlin Inglesby as Washington's pitchers to have earn multiple selections to the preseason watchlist. Bates joins Ali Aguilar as Husky shortstops to have earn multiple Player of the Year watchlist spots in their careers.
For Bates, this is the second year in a row she has been put on the preseason Player of the Year watchlist. A unanimous First Team All-American in 2019, Bates will enter her senior season with two All-American awards, two Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year awards, and three NFCA All-Region awards in her three completed seasons. She has the highest fielding percentage ever of a Husky shortstop and has hit over .380 with an on-base percentage over .400 in each of the last two seasons.
This is also Flores' second consecutive year on the preseason watchlist. A redshirt senior, Flores earned her first All-American award last year and hit 23 homers, the third-most in the nation. In Pac-12 play alone, Flores led the conference with 11 home runs, the most ever by a Husky. She also hit five home runs in postseason play to give her nine in her career, a school record for postseason homers. Flores did not make an error all year behind the plate, giving her her second error-less season in three years at Washington.
Plain was also on USA Softball's watchlist in 2019. She has been named an All-American in each of her two collegiate seasons, earning First Team honors after 2019. Plain is the only Husky in school history to throw 100+ innings and allow 100 or fewer hits in a single season: she has done it both years thus far. Plain has two All-Pac-12 First Team awards and two NFCA All-Region awards in her two seasons and carries a career ERA of 1.13 into 2020.
Washington's season will begin on the road at the Buzz Classic in Atlanta on February 7. Washington's first home game of 2020 will be an exhibition matchup against the U.S. National Team, set for March 12 at 6:00 pm.
