SEATTLE --- Washington senior Jaret Townsend has been selected in the third round as the 58th overall pick by Sporting KC in the Major League Soccer Superdraft on Monday.
Townsend becomes the fourth Husky to go into the MLS over the last three seasons and the third to be selected in the Superdraft in as many years (Justin Fiddes 2017 1st Rd; Kyle Coffee 2018 2nd Rd). In addition, Handwalla Bwana signed as a Homegrown Player in 2017. Overall, Townsend becomes the 15th UW player selected in the MLS draft or signed homegrown over the last seven seasons.
Townsend, who hails from Highlands Ranch, Colo., had an impressive senior season, scoring a career-high seven goals and adding an assist. He was one of four players to appear in all 21 matches for the Huskies, starting 14 and playing 1,251 minutes. He finished his career with nine goals and six assists over four seasons, appearing in 75 matches and making 42 starts.
"Im unbelievably excited for this opportunity that Sporting KC has provided me," said Townsend. "I'm ready to get there and start working. I know my four years at UW has prepared me for this and I couldn't think of a better place to have spent my college career."
"I am so pleased for Jaret," said UW Head Coach Jamie Clark. "He's a player that works so hard at his game day in and day out. Because of this, he will be a great pro. And to see him get rewarded for this diligence is great! SKC are getting an outstanding you man and I'm excited to see where his soccer career goes from here."
