Dawgs Lead the Pack on Day One of Husky Invitational
September 16, 2019 | Men's Golf
The University of Washington men's golf team began their 2019-20 campaign at their own Husky Invitational with 36 holes posting a 22-under 554 (274-280) on Monday. The Huskies lead the pack heading into the final round, which begins Tuesday morning at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington.
After starting his day at one-over par, Noah Woosley went seven under over his next 27 holes to move into a first-place tie. Jan Schneider carted UW's best round of the day over his first 18 as he went 6-under. Woolsey and Schneider led the way for UW, but the rest of the Huskies weren't far behind. Each Husky golfer finishing in the top 11 in a field of 78.
After the first 18 holes, the Huskies had posted a 14-under-par, leading second-place Long Beach State by 2 strokes. It didn't take long for UW to build on their lead, however. After the second round, UW's 22-under 554 was eight strokes better than Long Beach State.
"It was a good day," said head coach Alan Murray. "We had five guys in the top 11 and we played really well this morning. We got out of the traps quickly and they kept it going all day. The golf course was excellent, so if you hit good shots you can have good putts for birdies. We did a lot of that and I'm really happy and proud of everyone's efforts."
Along with Woolsey and Schneider, the Huskies featured freshman Bo Peng, sophomore Paul Margolis, and senior Henry Lee. All five in the lineup had at least five birdies in the first 18 holes.
"Everyone played well today," said coach Murray. "Bo Peng, in his first college place is in 11th place, that's excellent. Noah and Jan were our best players last year and have continued that here. They were all really standout performances and there weren't many shots between our first guy and our last guy. Each of them has a chance to win the tournament tomorrow."
Senior Henry Lee and sophomore Paul Margolis also found themselves in the top ten, as Lee posted a five-under 139 (68-71), which is tied for fifth while Margolis is tied for ninth with a four-under 140 (70-70).
Freshmen Bo Peng had an impressive debut for UW, starting his college career tied for 11th with a 3-under 141 (70-71). He got off to a strong start with five birdies and only three bogeys in the first round, followed by four more birdies in the second.
Washington also had three student-athletes competing as individuals in the event. Freshman Petr Hruby and sophomore Ranveer Grewal are tied for 38th at 3-over 147 while senior Shamu Bodhidatta is tied for 55th at 7-over 151.
The Huskies are coming off a trip to Ireland where they played one of the most difficult courses in the world. The international experience served the team well, leaving each of the five golfers with an impressive first day of the Husky Invitational and a chance to win both the individual and team titles.
Washington will tee off with Long Beach State and Nevada at 9:05 a.m. PT. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
