Kalmoe, McCabe Book Spots In Pairs Semifinals At World Championships
August 28, 2019 | Women's Rowing
LINZ-OTTENSHEIM, Austria – UW alumni Megan Kalmoe '06 of the United States and Conlin McCabe '13 of Canada each took a big step towards qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games on Wednesday, advancing from their pairs quarterfinals at the 2019 World Championships to earn a spot in the A/B semifinals.
The top 11 men's and women's pairs at World Championships qualify for the 2020 Olympics, meaning all but one of the 12 crews that qualified for the A/B semifinals will earn that honor. Kalmoe won her quarterfinal race, placing her in contention for her fourth Olympics, while McCabe's pair took second place in its quarter, putting him in good position to reach his third Olympic Games.
Six current and former Huskies rowed in the men's and women's pairs quarterfinals, with berths in the A/B semifinals on the line for each. In each case, the crews needed a top-three finish in the quarters to remain in the medal hunt.
Kalmoe, who has won four World Championships medals along with 2012 Olympic bronze, got the job done in her women's pair quarterfinal Wednesday. Along with U.S. partner Tracy Eisser, Kalmoe's shell led for the entire 2,000 meters, and cruised into the A/B semifinals by about a half a length of open water.
In the third of the four women's quarterfinals, Huskies Calina Schanze and Tabea Schendekehl raced for Germany. The two UW women spent the majority of the race in fourth position behind crews from New Zealand, Spain and Chile. Schanze and Schendekehl rowed the fastest final 500 meters of the race, but were unable to catch the Chileans for third place, finishing about one and a half seconds back in fourth.
They'll move on to a C/D semifinal on Thursday.
McCabe and his pairs partner, Kai Langerfeld, actually had to row their race twice on Wednesday. In the original running, an umpire's launch collided with the Polish pair, resulting in a broken oar and necessitating a re-row. The Canadians finished a close second to Italy and just in front of Romania the first time around.
In the second running of the race, about six hours later, the results were the nearly the same, at least in terms of the top three. In another tight finish among that trio, Italy came out on top once more, though Romania took second place ahead of McCabe's shell. Canada, however, finished comfortably ahead of fourth-place Poland and those three earned spots in the A/B semifinals on Thursday.
In another men's quarter, a Dutch pair featuring 2019 graduate Michiel Mantel finished in fifth place to book a place in the C/D semifinal. Mantel's pair was able to overtake Germany in the final 500, but couldn't catch up to one of the qualifiying spots.
And in the final men's quarterfinal, American Ezra Carlson finished just out of an A/B semifinal qualifying spot. The two-time IRA champion and his partner were narrowly beaten to the finish line by Great Britain, which edged Carlson's shell by 0.42 seconds. The fourth-place finish places the Americans in the C/D semis.
All of those pairs will compete again on Thursday, which will be the busiest day to date for the UW contingent in Austria. Along with those five, 11 other Huskies will race. See the full schedule for Washington rowers below.
