Eights Heats Begin Tuesday At 2019 World Championships
August 26, 2019 | Women's Rowing
LINZ-OTTENSHEIM, Austria – The second day of the 2019 World Rowing Championships was quiet for the 20 UW athletes competing at the regatta, with only one of them competing Monday, but the action heats up on Tuesday as, among other things, the men's and women's eights race for the first time.
Dutchman Michiel Mantel, a 2019 UW graduate, finished in second place in his men's pair repechage, which was enough for him to advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Mantel and his pair teammate Freek Robbers led at 500 meters, but had dropped to third heading into the final 500. Needing a top-two finish to reach the quarterfinals, the Dutch pair out-sprinted Cuba to take second place.
One other UW rower, sophomore Dimitra Tsamopoulou, was scratched from the women's double sculls heat Monday morning, due to injury. She will not compete in the regatta as she'd originally planned.
Tuesday, 12 current and former Huskies – including seven in the men's and women's eights – will be on the race course, nine of them for the first time this week.
Two Huskies will compete in the women's eight. Katelin (Snyder) Guregian will serve as the United States coxswain for the seventh time at a World Championship or Olympic regatta. The U.S. women won the gold last year, as well as at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Guregian has guided the American eight to four World titles as well as that Olympic gold.
In the other of the two heats, Fiona Gammond will row in the bow seat for Great Britain, her third World Championships regatta in that shell.
Five Huskies will row for four different countries in the men's eight, four of them in heat two. The Huskies' 2019 captain, Ben Davison, will make his U.S. men's eight debut, rowing in the seven seat. Davison has competed at two previous World Championships, but in the double sculls.
Davison will square off with the UW's 2016 team captain, Jacob Dawson, who has established himself as a regular in the British men's eight this summer. Last year, he won bronze in the GB men's four at the World Championships.
Also in heat two are senior Simon van Dorp and former Husky Bram Schwarz, who will man the four and six seats, respectively, in the Netherlands eight. Schwarz rowed in the last two World regattas, though not in the eight, while van Dorp was in the Dutch eight that finished seventh in the world last summer.
The women's quad sculls will begin their competition Tuesday as well. Chiara Ondoli will row in the stroke seat in the Italian four. Last summer, she took sixth in the world in the same event. In the second W4x heat, Kirstyn Goodger will race in the New Zealand bow seat. Goodger rowed in the straight four in the 2017 World Championships.
Also Tuesday, three more Huskies will row in repechages. Valentina Iseppi (Italy) and Phoebe Spoors (New Zealand) will compete in the women's four. Each will need a top-three finish in a five-boat race to earn a berth in the A/B semifinals.
In the men's four, Serbian Viktor Pivac will race in repechage one, needing to finish first or second to move through to the A/B semis.
