Sekyra, Jensen Named Team Captains
August 19, 2019 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - With just a few days before the first game of the 2019 season, the Washington Huskies have named this year's team captains. Taylor Sekyra and Lisa Jensen were so honored, ready to serve as captains all year long. Washington's captains are selected by team vote.
"Lisa and Taylor embody, in their own unique and authentic ways, what our team looks for in leaders," said Lesle Gallimore. "They are good conduits between players and staff, mature, honest, and known through their actions for putting the teams interests before everything. They've both more than earned this honor and respect from their teammates and coaches."
For Sekyra, this is the second year in a row she has served as team captain. In 2018, the central defender served as the lone captain for the Huskies. She has started every game for both of the last two years, all in central defense, and has started 47 consecutive games for the Huskies, dating back to 2016. In each of the last two years, Sekyra has played over 1500 minutes, missing just 34 total minutes over those two seasons combined. In each of the last three seasons, Sekyra has earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors for her diligent work in the classroom.
"I'm really grateful and feel honored to be named one of our team captains," said Sekyra. "I feel like I learned a lot from this past season and I'm ready to accomplish so much as a team in my final season."
Jensen has also been an integral part of Washington's defense during her time on Montlake. She has started 19 games each of the last two years, primarily serving as Washington's left back. Last season, Jensen picked up her first two career assists, jumping into the attack early to help the Huskies take the lead against #7 Florida and earn a win against Cal State Fullerton. In 12 of Washington's 19 games, Jensen played every minute, playing less than 75 minutes just once all year. Academically, Jensen has earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors in each of her two years of eligibility for that honor.
"I'm excited for this opportunity to fill a bigger leadership role," said Jensen. "This year especially we have other leaders on the team who are just as critical to our success. We are all going to hold each other to higher standards and I'm here for my team however they need me."
Washington's season starts this Friday, as the Huskies host Portland at 7:00 pm.
