July 24, 2019 | Women's Rowing
A win by the U.S. women's four, with UW rower Teal Cohen in the two seat, highlighted the morning for the Huskies on the first day of the World Rowing Under 23 Championships Wednesday in Sarasota, Fla.
Cohen, who will be a junior at the UW this coming year, and her American teammates won their heat to earn a direct spot in the A final on Sunday. The U.S. four was in second place at 500 and 1,000 meters, but passed Great Britain in the third 500 and held on for the win, securing one of only two direct berths in the final. Spain won the other heat to join them.
In that other heat, incoming freshman Grace Watson and New Zealand finished in second while fellow her future classmate, Nikki Martincic of Australia, took four place. Both will race in a repechage Thursday at 7:40 a.m. PT
In the women's quad sculls, Kieanna Stephens and her Canadian teammates finished in fourth place in their heat. They'll race again in a repechage tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. PT.
In the first of two men's four heats, the United States boat, with Huskies George Esau and David Bridges, finished fifth in a very tightly packed field. The U.S. time of 6:03.570 was within a second and a half of second place, though first-place New Zealand crossed the line with open water over all the others. The Americans will race in a repechage tomorrow at 7:50 a.m. PT.
A total of six Husky men competed in coxed four heats Wednesday, with three each in the U.S. and Germany shells. Both crews finished in third place in their respective heats. In the second heat, the German boat that included Nils Vorberg, Sebastian Ritter and Alexander Vollmer, also finished in third place, coming from fourth position to finish just shy of second-place Great Britain. Both crews will race in a repechage Thursday at 7:10 a.m.
