AUSTIN, Texas – The Husky women's track squad tied for the fourth-best finish in program history today at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, coming in a tie for 17th as Darhian Mills and Hannah Rusnak had top-10 efforts to cap off the year at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Mills earned two points with a seventh-place finish in the 400m hurdles while Rusnak just missed scoring in the heptathlon as she was ninth overall.
The Huskies scored 14 points behind the third-place finishes of Izzi Batt-Doyle in the 10k and Olivia Gruver in the pole vault, plus Mills' seventh-place in the 400m hurdles. It's the most points scored and the best final standing for the women's team since UW's program-best eighth-place finish in 2012. The women had not finished in the top-25 since that season.
Mills, in her first NCAA final, earned the first All-America First Team honor of her career with a seventh-place finish today. She wasn't able to run quite as clean as she did in the prelims, but still had one of the fastest times of her career, going 57.76, to finish seventh. That matches the best finish ever by a Husky in the event, tying Mari Bjone from 1991.
Rusnak broke the school record in the heptathlon for the third time this season as she finished off a career-best score of 5,779 points. Unfortunately that came up just 14 points short of eighth-place and a spot on the podium, so Rusnak will be a Second Team All-American, but still the highest finish ever by a Husky at NCAAs for the sophomore.
After starting the day in eighth-place Rusnak was just short of her PR in the day's first event, the long jump, as she went 19-7 1/2, good for eighth in that event. She then had the fourth-best javelin throw as she got a personal-best by one inch, tossing 141-feet, 3-inches. That moved Rusnak up to third overall but it was tightly packed going into the final 800-meters.
The 800-meters was the only event that Rusnak finished lower than 13th. She crossed in 2:28.90, four seconds off her personal-best.
