June 05, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- The Washington women's tennis team found out its opponents for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a pair of familiar faces making their way to Seattle January 25-26 for the first two rounds of the 2020 ITA Indoor Team Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, Washington is one of 15 teams selected to host the first two rounds--another first for the program. The Huskies, who finished ranked No. 10 in the final ITA rankings, welcome in No. 16 USC, No. 27 Kentucky and No. 33 Princeton. The winner of the single-elimination tournament in Seattle advances to the ITA Indoor Team Championship hosted by the University of Illinois, February 7-10.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend is unique in college athletics in that each regional is determined via the Kick-Off Weekend Draft, where each team selects which regional they wish to participate in. Selections are made in order of the final 2018-2019 Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
The first-round match for Washington will be a rematch of the NCAA Second-Round match between the Huskies and Tigers which was won 4-0 by UW in May. Meanwhile, the other first-round match will feature fellow Pac-12 rival USC against Kentucky. The winners of those first-round matches will face off in the second round on Saturday for the right to be one of 16 teams in the Team Indoor Championship field in Urbana.
Washington hosted the 2019 Indoor Team Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, earning an automatic berth as the host school. The Huskies lost 4-0 to No. 2 Vanderbilt in the first match, but pulled off an impressive 4-3 upset win over No. 14 North Carolina State in its second match, catapulting the Huskies into the ITA Top 10.
UW is 17-16 all-time at the event, finishing in the top 12 five times including a third-place finish at the 2004 event. The Huskies last advanced out of the first two rounds in 2011, upsetting Texas and host Florida State by 4-3 scores before dropping three matches and finishing 15th at the final site in Charlottesville, Va.
Washington finished the 2018-19 season with its best winning percentage in program history after posting a 21-5 record, earning Head Coach Robin Stephenson Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. The Huskies reached the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time since 2009 after hosting the first two rounds of the tournament for the first time in 15 years.
