Alvelo's Historic Performance Helps Huskies To 1-0 Win
June 01, 2019 | Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – Behind an absolute gem from Taran Alvelo, the #3 Washington Huskies defeated the #13 Oklahoma State Cowboys 1-0 to advance to the World Series semi-finals. Alvelo tied her career high with 16 strikeouts, retiring the side in order five times and striking out the side three times.
Alvelo put on a performance for the ages, setting the Washington World Series record for strikeouts with 16. The previous record was 12, set by Danielle Lawrie in 2009: Alvelo surpassed that mark in the fifth inning. 11 of Alvelo's first 12 outs were strikeouts.
Alvelo showed superb control throughout the game, starting things with four consecutive strikeouts. She did not have two balls on a batter until the second batter of the fourth inning and only went to a three-ball count three times.
Only one batter reached scoring position all day against Alvelo. The senior followed all three of Oklahoma State's hits with consecutive strikeouts and ended the night retiring ten batters in a row for the shutout.
Offensively, Amirah Milloy drove in the game's only run. Sami Reynolds and Kaija Gibson each had two hits, with Reynolds making a running catch against the wall to rob a double and Gibson diving to save an infield single on defense.
The Huskies will face #2 UCLA tomorrow with a berth in the championship series on the line. Washington will have to beat UCLA twice to advance, with game one set for 10:00 am PT.
