Washington Earns Ten Year-End Pac-12 Awards
May 08, 2019 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - The Washington Huskies earned ten Pac-12 year-end awards, including Sis Bates winning Defensive Player of the Year. The Huskies earned six All-Pac-12 awards, the second year in a row that the team has had at least that many players make All-Pac-12 and the third time in the last five years.
Taran Alvelo, Taryn Atlee, Sis Bates, SilentRain Espinoza, Morganne Flores, Sami Reynolds, and Gabbie Plain all earned awards from the Pac-12. Alvelo, Bates, Flores, and Plain were all named to the All-Pac-12 First Team, giving Washington multiple First Team honors for the 11th consecutive year. Atlee and Reynolds were each named to the All-Pac-12 Third Team, while Reynolds and Espinoza earned All-Freshman honors.
This is the third consecutive All-Pac-12 First Team award for Alvelo, who has set a career high in strikeouts this year in 26 fewer innings than 2018. Alvelo has already won 20 games for the third consecutive year and now ranks third in Washington history in wins with 98. Her 839 strikeouts are fourth in UW history, just four behind Ashley Boek for third. The senior threw her second career no-hitter this season, retiring 21 of 22 batters against Utah Valley.
In addition to winning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, Bates earned her second All-Pac-12 First Team award and second All-Defensive award. Bates leads the Pac-12 with a .485 batting average in conference play and has gone hitless only 13 times: she has 18 multi-hit games, including two perfect 4-for-4 days. With her third straight year of 60+ hits, Bates now has over 200 hits in her first three years, something accomplished by only four other Huskies ever.
Plain has now been named to the All-Pac-12 First Team each of her two years at Washington. Only six other Huskies ever have done that. This season, Plain became the first Husky ever to throw back-to-back no-hitters, giving her three no-hitters in her career, counting her 2018 perfect game against Utah. Her 1.39 ERA is third in the conference and is the lowest mark of any pitcher with at least 140 innings.
This is Flores' first career All-Pac-12 award. She has 18 home runs this season and 11 in Pac-12 play, the most conference home runs in a single season by any Husky ever. Flores leads the Pac-12 in home runs and slugging percentage during Pac-12 play. With one more homer, Flores will become the eighth Husky ever to hit 40 in their career. The junior needs just three more RBI for her second 50 RBI season, having driving in multiple runs in 14 games already.
Atlee earned her first All-Pac-12 award after putting together a .367/.432/.420 slash line. In her second season at Washington, Atlee has set career highs in almost every category. She surpassed her 2018 hit total in 32 fewer games and has 17 multi-hit games. That includes a stretch that saw her record four consecutive multi-hit games, with three of those four opponents ranked at the time. Atlee has four hitting streaks of five or more games, with a career-best ten-game streak to start the season.
Reynolds becomes the tenth Husky ever to be named to both the All-Freshman and All-Pac-12 teams. She joins Plain and Alvelo as active Huskies that have done so. Reynolds has performed best against the toughest opponents, hitting .370/.431/.500 against ranked opposition this season. Against #19 Baylor, Reynolds had the first four-hit day by a Husky freshman since 2012. Since the beginning of Pac-12 play, Reynolds has 12 extra-base hits, with a .581 slugging percentage against conference opponents.
Espinoza's All-Freshman award comes after a year of excellence at the plate. The freshman has hit .371 this year, the highest batting average by a Husky frosh since Trysten Melhart's .379 mark in 2015. Espinoza had a three-hit, three-RBI day in just her third career game. In her last eight games, Espinoza has four extra-base hits, driving in 11 runs and scoring seven in that time.
