Sis Bates Repeats As Pac-12 Defensive Player Of The Year
May 08, 2019 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 announced Sis Bates as the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, the second year in a row that Bates has been so honored. Bates is one of three Huskies ever to win Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, alongside Jenn Salling (2011) and Shawna Wright (2013).
In the 14 years the award has existed, Washington has won it four times, the second-most of any school in the Pac-12. Washington is one of three schools to have three or more players win the award.
Bates is the first Husky ever to win multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards from the Pac-12 and just the third, alongside Kristen Rivera and Danielle Lawrie, to win multiple Pac-12 Player of the Year awards of any kind. Only two other players in the history of the conference, Stanford's Rosey Neill (2008-2010) and Lauren Lappin (2005-2006), have won the Defensive Player of the Year award multiple times in their career.
This season, Bates has made only two errors, the fewest of any middle infielder in the Pac-12. She has a .980 career fielding percentage, a mark only one middle infielder in Washington history, Sara Pickering, has bested. Of players with 40 putouts and 40 assists in the Pac-12, Bates is the only with fewer than five errors on the year. No other player with at least 75 assists has fewer than seven errors. Bates has made just 11 errors in 175 career games.
