Husky Recruits Shine At State Meets
May 28, 2019 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – While a group of 42 current Huskies were competing in the first rounds of the NCAA Championships this past week in Sacramento, a number of incoming Huskies were putting the finishing touches on outstanding high school careers at the Washington State Championships in Tacoma and Cheney. The biggest highlight came in the 4A boys 1,600-meter final, when UW recruits Daniel Maton, Joe Waskom, and Luke Houser went 1-2-3 in one of the fastest races in state history.
Maton, the Camas High School product, held off Waskom and Houser last Thursday in a time of 4:06.07 that is the fastest in the U.S. this season. Waskom ran the second-fastest time in the U.S. in 4:06.64, and Houser's third-place time of 4:08.17 ranks 11th-fastest nationally.
Maton becomes the first runner in 4A history to win three straight 1,600-meter titles. He would then come back and win the 800-meters in 1:52.07 and also run on the 4x400-meter relay that got the victory.
Waskom, from Mt. Si High School, moved up in distance after the 1,600-meters and won the 3,200-meter title in 8:56.02. Again, Houser was right behind, picking up the silver medal in the 3,200-meters in 8:57.38.
At the 1A state meet, Husky signee Andrea Markezich (Bear Creek H.S./Woodinville) was runner-up in the 3,200-meters and fourth in the 1,600-meters.
Several Husky throwers collected state titles to close that chapter of their careers as well. Sam Van Peursem, from Cedar Park Christian in Bothell, defended his 1A discus title with a PR of 181-2 and won his first shot put title going 60-8. Van Peursem had a shot put PR of 64-6 at the district meet that ranks him 12th nationally.
The Huskies boast the top-two finishers in the 4A women's javelin, as Natalie Holmer from North Creek High School in Bothell won the competition and Tanya Simora of Puyallup finished second. Weather conditions made it tough on the whole field, but Simora now boasts a season-best of 160-11 that ranks third in the U.S. and Holmer has a 147-4 PR that ranks her 17th.
Another recent signee, Beatrice Asomaning of Olympia High School, won the 4A discus title going 146-7, winning by seventeen feet. She has a season-best of 150-3.
