>> Washington Signs Talented Middle Summers
SEATTLE – Washington announced the third member of its 2019 freshman class today as libero/defensive specialist Sianna Houghton from Menlo Park, Calif. is set to become a Dawg. Houghton joins Sophie Summers and Olivia Mikkelsen as incoming Huskies this fall.
Houghton is 5-foot-10 and has played as a six-rotation outside hitter but will transition to a defensive role at Washington. She attends Menlo School and has played seven years for Vision Volleyball Club.
"Sianna is a player we have gotten to know over a long period of time," said Washington Head Coach Keegan Cook. "She's from the Bay Area where Jason (Mansfield) and I both coached. She stuck out early as someone who was passionate about Washington Volleyball.
Cook describes her as an "extremely athletic" defender. "She has spent most of her career as an outside hitter and still does a lot of hitting on the club circuit, so she's a very physical player and goes to the ground really well," says Cook, "and she has good ball control as you would hope for from that position. Excited to finally get her here as she has been committed for quite some time."
Houghton was a three-time All-West Bay Athletic League selection, earning First Team honors in 2017 and 2018 and leading the league in digs as a senior. Her team made the state tournament all four years, winning the Division-IV state title her sophomore year in 2016, the first state title for the school.
She has also taken part in multiple USA High Performance Training Camps at the Select A1 and Future Select A1 levels from 2013-15.
With her club team, she has been part of four teams that earned top-10 finishes at the USAV Junior National Championships. In 2018, her Vision Gold team finished 21st in the 18 Open division and was top-four at three different qualifier tournaments. She also was fifth in 2017 in the 17 National Division, and in 2015 was 10th in the 15 Open Division.
"Washington has always been a second home to me," says Houghton. "Although I grew up in California, I would stay with my family in Puyallup every summer and we would visit Seattle and the UW campus. The school drew me in with its academic rigor, incredible school spirit, and, of course, the cherry blossoms.
"I saw myself fitting in and loving the school after visiting Keegan's volleyball camps and touring the campus. The volleyball program—both the team and the coaches—radiate a type of welcome and warmth that is unseen anywhere else, while at the same time maintaining the standard of a top D-I program. I am excited to push my abilities and become a better player and student as a Husky. Go Dawgs!!"
