Eight Huskies Named All-Region
May 16, 2019 | Softball
SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies broke a school record today, earning eight All-Region awards from the NFCA for the first time in school history. Taran Alvelo, Taryn Atlee, Sis Bates, SilentRain Espinoza, Morganne Flores, Amirah Milloy, Gabbie Plain, and Sami Reynolds all earned All-Region, besting last year's record total of seven. Eight is the maximum number of possible All-Region awards any one school can earn in a single year.
Washington had previously earned seven All-Region awards twice, in 2016 and 2018. This year, the Huskies had five All-Region First Team awards, tied for the most in school history. Washington also had five First Team honors in 2010, 2011, and 2014. Alvelo, Atlee, Bates, Flores, and Plain all earned All-Region First Team. Espinoza, Milloy, and Reynolds were named to the Third Team.
This is the fourth All-Region honor in Alvelo's career and second straight First Team award. The senior was named Second Team after her freshman and sophomore campaigns. This year, Alvelo led the Pac-12 in strikeouts, becoming the first Husky to strike out 250 batters in one year since Danielle Lawrie did so in 2010. She has 16 scoreless appearances, including her second career no-hitter, coming against Utah Valley. 12 times this year Alvelo has struck out double-digit batters in a single game.
Atlee earns her first All-Region award as a Husky after a year of career bests. Atlee is hitting over 100 points higher this year than in her first year at Washington, with 17 multi-hit games to her name. She has four hitting streaks of five or more games entering postseason play. Atlee started all but one game for the Huskies this year.
Bates adds another award to her collection with her third All-Region honor and second First Team selection. Bates has already been named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row, one of just three players ever to do that. She has earned All-Pac-12 First Team and Pac-12 All-Defensive honors this year. Bates finished third in the Pac-12 in conference batting average, hitting .438 against Pac-12 opponents.
For Flores, this is her first All-Region First Team award after earning Second Team in 2017. Flores hit 18 home runs in the regular season, including a school-record 11 against Pac-12 opponents. No player in the Pac-12 hit more against conference opponents this year. An All-Pac-12 First Team selection, Flores broke both the 150 hit and 150 RBI marks this season. She has set career highs in runs, home runs, and on-base percentage, all while making zero errors.
Plain earned All-Region Second Team last year before taking home First Team this season. In 2019, Plain became the first Husky ever to throw back-to-back no-hitters, which were two of her 20 appearances without allowing a run. She has already set a career high in strikeouts and, with six more, would have her first 200-strikeout season. Plain also became the second-fastest Husky ever to 40 career wins, behind only Tia Bollinger.
Espinoza's All-Region Third Team award comes after a stellar freshman year that saw her hit .380, the highest batting average by a Husky freshman since Becky Newbry's school-record .386 average in 1996. Since the beginning of April, Espinoza has recorded six multi-hit games as well as all four of her extra-base hits. Against her last three Pac-12 opponents, she has six runs and six RBI.
Milloy took home the first All-Region award of her career, making it onto the Third Team. With career highs in almost every category, Milloy was particularly dangerous against Pac-12 opponents, with one of the ten highest slugging percentages in conference play of any Pac-12 player. She had 13 extra-base hits against Pac-12 opponents after entering this season with 13 career extra-base hits. Milloy also stole eight bases in eight attempts, doubling her previous career best.
Reynolds' All-Region Third Team award makes her the second Husky freshman with an All-Region award this year. That makes this the fourth time in UW history that multiple freshmen earned All-Region, along with 2016 (Alvelo, Flores), 2001 (Tia Bollinger, Amanda Oleson), and 1994 (Shelley Brown, Sara Pickering). Reynolds also earned All-Pac-12 Third Team and Pac-12 All-Freshman after hitting .325 with 39 RBI. Against ranked opponents, Reynolds hit .370.
Washington begins the postseason this weekend, hosting Mississippi State, Seattle U, and Fordham in Regionals.
